deer repellant

vicki,
we live very close to a park, full of deer, and they often sleep in the
lower part of our yard at night. i have had wonderful luck with
spearing bars of "original irish spring" soap on garden stakes and
placing them throughout the garden, especially at the borders. i place
them at heights appropriate to the flowers in that area, and the deer
leave them alone! they don't look too unsightly because they are
green, and mix in with the flowers. two springs ago i tested the
theory by leaving one side of lilies (a favorite of the deer in my
yard) unprotected, and the other side protected by the 'soap on a
stick' ... the deer demolished the unprotected side, leaving the soaped
lilies totally alone. last spring i put the soap in all of the gardens
and the deer went elsewhere to graze. apparently, other soaps don't
work ... just original irish spring (the green one). my neighbor was
skeptical of my treatment, and spent hours putting netting over her
plants, which made her yard look like a war zone. last spring she
tried the soap and it worked for her too ... hope this helps!

I just finished reading an article about a newer deer repellant on the
market and it sounds wonderful!!! But I was wondering if anyone has had
experience with "Deer Fortress"...check out their website at www
deerfortress.com I cannot find it locally so I guess I am going to have to
order it but before I did wanted to see if anyone has used it and can they
report back!

Thanks

Suzi,
How did you attach the bar of soap to the stakes and how far apart
did you place them?

i usually just stab the soap onto the top of a gardening stake, being
careful to push the stake into the middle of the soap so that it
doesn't break ... like a popsicle. bamboo stakes work great, as long
as they are sturdy enough not to bend under the weight of the soap
(you can cut each bar of soap in half so that you have 2 squares of
soap, if you want). i place the stakes about 3 feet apart around the
edges of the gardens, but you can adjust this to fit your needs. the
deer really like my hosta and lilies, so i'm more careful in these
beds. be sure to vary the height of the stakes to coordinate with
the height of the blossoms, so that the deer don't easily reach below
or above the soap to nibble. when it rains, the soap drips onto the
foliage and doubles the protection, and at the end of the season, i
pull up the stakes with the soap still on them and put them away to
reuse the following spring. it really works great!

i haven't noticed any problems in the garden since i started using
the soap, years ago. the flowers and plants are still very healthy,
and come back bigger and stronger year after year. i'm not sure that
very much of the soap rinses in to the soil, because i've used the
same half bars for the past 3 springs, and there is a lot of soap
still in tact on the stakes. of course, we haven't had all that much
rain the past couple of summers ... so who knows!

My only concern with using soap is that it can drastically alter the ph of
the soil and it drips onto the ground during a rain and this can lead to
other gardening problems....but I have heard many people swear by this
method.

Thanks, I will try this. Maybe if I put the stakes in a pail of hot
water to heat them up before sticking the soap it would prevent the
soap breaking.

might help, but i usually just kind of slowly screw them into the
soap, and don't have too much difficulty. i use stakes about the
width of a pencil.

Could you leave the soap in the package? Of course it wouldn't look
as nice (as if a soap popsicle looks nice LOL!!) - but you'd still
have the smell and it wouldn't dissolve as quickly. I've never used
the Irish Spring remedy, but have heard from others that it works. I
would also be afraid of too much soap in the soil.

I have a concoction that I spray - of course it's more work than the
soap on a stick, but it's cheap, instead of buying ready made spray -

3 gallons water
1 egg, beaten well
1 cup milk
3 Tbsp. coooking oil
several drops dishwashing detergent

Mix well. Put in a sprinkling can or sprayer. The sprayer nozzle may
get clogged up because of the egg in there, but if you put the egg and
milk in a blender first and puree it for several seconds before adding
to the rest of the stuff it should be ok.
