bananas about nanners

There's not much of an easier fruiting tropical plant you can grow -
bananas are ideal for any beginner - as while I'm skilled at killing
plants, these guys have tolerated me well enough. I can't wait for them
to start flowering! They'll occupy the South side of my pit-greenhouse
when I've re-arranged everything - they're taller and can reach the sun
while the shorter taro will be along the Northern wall because they're
shorter and will benefit from the sun in the Winter. In the summer it
won't matter - the sun comes from straight above. I'm still amazed that
my back-hoe operating friend dug this thing so perfectly East-West - it
has helped massively in placing my plants.

Be well,
Mike

Mike,
Have you ever tried to go nanas by seed?

Yes, but I wasn't able to get them to germinate. Not sure if it was old
seed or me. However, my primary goal for nanners is food - I have one
ornamental that I got by accident and the rest produce seedless edible
nanners. The seeded nanners have more seeds than nanner so are not
considered worth eating.

However, even seedless nanners will produce seed but usually it's like
one seed for every thousand bananas and only if they are purposefully
pollinated - that's how new breeds are developed - a lot of nanners are
mushed looking for the very few seeds they produce. Then they have to
grow those out and see if their nanners are remarkable enough to survive
the disease, taste, look and travelability testing. The winners are then
tissue cultured and distributed. Of course, nanner genetics is extremely
variable - natural sports also grow vegetatively too that are different
enough from the parent to warrant extra development.

Be well,
Mike
