Hi,
I am wondering if someone can explain what exactly a pot tuber is for
me? Is this a cutting that has just been left in a small pot longer
and not transplanted to the garden? I have seen several places offer
cuttings for sale but some also offer pot tubers. Thanks in advance
Nicki :)

Cutting taken and spends it's life in a pot. 4" pots are bit enough becaus=
e you want all tubers in a small area & you can grow a full size plant in t=
his size pot. In the fall you dig the pot out of the ground, let all of t=
he moisture dry out of the pot and place it laying on it's side in cold sto=
rage until spring. In the spring this clump of roots are removed from the =
pot, partially replanted in growing medium with the top of the crown expose=
d and within a couple of weeks multiple sprouts will form and all can be ta=
ken for cuttings to use in the garden. Very good if you have limited space=
in storage. One pot root will yield many, many cuttings.

What kind of growth and flowering do you get off a dahlia in a 4" pot? I ca=

I have tried planting tubers and pot tubers side by side in my garden and c=
ould not tell the difference until dug. The planted pot tubers often out gr=
ew the pot. Many will be large enough to divide.
When I want to make pot tubers for myself, I always keep them above the soi=
l. The pot tubers are much smaller and never out grow the 3.5" pot.
Loney in Bremerton
If you place the pot in the garden and bury the pot a bit, I have heard of =
dahlias growing nearly normal in size but of course they are still not as l=
arge as garden grown plants. However, most people who grow pot tubers do n=
ot want the plants to grow large and are only interested in the pot tuber t=
hat is produced. I have seen them grown on tables and on green house benche=
s above the ground. I have seen them planted nearly pot to pot in long rows=
and only watered and fertilized enough to make the desired pot tuber. In o=
ther words pot tubers are not generally grown for the flowers but for the s=
mall tuber clumps. In England, Halls of Heddon only sells pot tubers to cus=
tomers in the USA. The tuber clumps are very small and appear to have been =
grown in very small pots. However, they send up wonderful sprouts and I got=
30 cuttings off one small pot tuber from them. So the cuttings grown in po=
ts are next years source of small tuber clumps for taking cuttings. Or, a =
pot tuber can be planted directly in the garden just like a tuber. One need=
s to be sure that only one sprout is allowed to grow and the others removed=
(small flowered varieties can have more than one sprout however).
I just have a hard time picturing a plant that "normally" gets 5-6 feet tal=
l and produces many 9" tubers actually growing and surviving in a 4" pot an=
d producing viable tubers that somehow store BETTER than field grown ones. =
What kind of growth and flowering do you get off a dahlia in a 4" pot? I ca=
n't imagine something like Golden Years that grows mammoth stems and tubers=
for me surviving a summer in a 4" pot, but I'll try it!

Cutting taken and spends it's life in a pot. 4" pots are bit enough becaus=
e you want all tubers in a small area & you can grow a full size plant in t=
his size pot. In the fall you dig the pot out of the ground, let all of t=

pot, partially replanted in growing medium with the top of the crown expose=

I plant a display garden at our local grocery store. I plant only cuttings=
that are in 4" or 5" pots. The pot tubers produce beautiful plants that s=
ometimes outbloom the same varieties grown from tubers in my garden at home=
. I attribute it to them not working so hard to produce tubers. They may n=
ot grow quite as tall, but I see that as an advantage.
The soil at the display garden is terrible, so I make sure there is very g=
ood potting soil in the pot, along with a little Osmocote. I give them a l=
ittle Miracle Grow or something similar once or twice during the season. W=
hen I dig them up, the tubers have generally exploded the pots. I break of=
f anything that has grown through the bottom and put them someplace where t=
hey won't freeze during the winter. At this time of year I start taking th=
em out of the pots. I generally can get 4 or 5 good tubers off that pot tu=
ber. I recommend this method of planting to people who have to dig, but ha=
ve a lot of trouble doing it due to time or health problems, or to those th=
at have very bad soil or rocks to deal with.
When I locate my camera cord, I'll send some pictures I took of one of the =
pots I dug.

That will be my project for today (after it warms up a bit, 27 degrees F.!)=
.
I have pot tubers of both, grown in my garden and grown in my green house. =
I will photograph them in the pot and again after removed from the pot. Thi=
s will show everyone the difference.
Loney in Bremerton
When I locate my camera cord, I'll send some pictures I took of one of the =
pots I dug.

Subject: Re: [dahlias] Pot tuber question?
I just have a hard time picturing a plant that "normally" gets 5-6 feet tal=
l and produces many 9" tubers actually growing and surviving in a 4" pot an=
d producing viable tubers that somehow store BETTER than field grown ones. =
What kind of growth and flowering do you get off a dahlia in a 4" pot? I ca=
n't imagine something like Golden Years that grows mammoth stems and tubers=
for me surviving a summer in a 4" pot, but I'll try it!

Or is a tuber allowed to sprout, cuttings taken and most put in the garden =
but one put in a pot to become the pot tuber? Wouldn't you need a huge pot =
to accomodate the bigger dahlia plants and resuting tubers? What do you do =
in the fall? I think I need a step by step explanation and instructions!
Tom
