If you are going to grow English ivy,
be careful to keep it away from
your house- its tendrils can crack
mortar and peel paint off wood.
It can also damage trees if it
grows up the trunks.
Also, in some areas it is considered
invasive and people are discouraged
from growing it.
You might consider Virginia creeper,
which is not evergreen (it loses its
leaves) but has great fall color. It will
climb up walls but will not damage them,
tho its suckers will leave marks.

That reminds me - when you said English ivy can damage trees - does
anyone know if that same is true with a honeysuckle vine? I have one
that popped up by itself at the base of one of my spruce trees a
couple years ago, and it's winding around the trunk. I would hate for
the tree to die.

It depends on which honeysuckle it is. Some types are very well-behaved
and cause no trouble. Others... Japanese honeysuckle, the common wild
one... really is a bit of a menace and your tree would be in danger from
it. I once grew a cutting of it in a pot just for fun, and the speed at
which that thing can grow is amazing, and it gets huge, and it spreads like
mad. If it's Japanese honeysuckle you might want to start pulling it up
before it eats your tree.

I would refrain from using english ivy at all unless confined to a
pot. This is an invasive species. It takes over yards and kills bushes
and trees as well as damages houses. Here in Fairfax County, Va, they
have declared it a danger and are trying to get it out of the parks.
So many people have planted it in their yards that it has become out
of control and spread to the parks killing off almost all the native
species. I've rented a house here for 2 years and we've been trying to
get rid of the ivy in the backyard which completely covers it. It is
almost impossible to pull it. The only thing that I heard that works
is to cover it with thick cardboard and then cover it with mulch for
2-3 years. I should also mention it makes a great cover for pests.
There are many alternatives to engish ivy. I would call your county or
look on their website to see if they have anything native that won't
take over the yard.

Thanks for the answers to my honeysuckle question everybody - I really
don't know which variety it is. I'm assuming the common wild one,
like you suggested, because it just came up by itself. It hasn't
flowered yet. And it has only been "hanging around" now for a couple
years, so I think I will try to get rid of it before it gets any
bigger. It has already grown about 10' up the trunk.

It seems you all have negative experience with the honeysuckle. Being
a landscape designer, I treat each specie according to its properties.
It is a strong vine but with a fragrant scent good for fencing or
arbor. The best way to train such vine is to trim/prune to your
likings. Avoid planting vines near a tree or planting where you do
not want the vine to dominate. And if you create a 'bonsai' out if
this, you will be surprise with the value in the market.
And if the vine is still young, you can relocate or pot them for
control.

I think I'll reconsider planting any kind of ivy if it's just going to be a=

Virginia Creeper is extremely invasive. I believe that in some areas it is =
actually classified as a noxious weed.
There is a 40 year old patch of ivy growing up a trellis on the front of my=
house. Diligent pulling and trimming keep it confined and keep it from gro=
wing under the siding. However, it has survived all of my attempts to eradi=
cate it by digging, pulling, and poisoning. Anyone planting this stuff shou=
ld think very carefully about whether they want a lifetime job controlling =
it. In fact, if anyone can tell me how to successfully eradicate it, I woul=
d be most appreciative.

I understand what you are saying about finding the right place for a plant =
and judging the plant on it's own merit. To me, though, I judge a plant by =
how much care and effort it takes and what value I get for that care. Is th=
is plant really earning the space it takes up in my garden and the time it =
takes me to care for it. If it doe not earn it's keep out it goes!
For me, English Ivy is a thug! It takes too much time to control it. Not on=
ly that, but I can't seem to be able to physically pull out those roots and=
tendrils. This is just too much trouble and the evergreen groundcover is n=
ot worth it too me. There are lots of other ground covers that are more man=
ageable. Sure Ivy is easy to grow and spreads quickly but it also over grow=
s its boundaries and seems determined to invade the neighbour's lawn. The i=

I have not experienced honeysuckle please don't send me any!

That's good. English Ivy is hated everywhere it is grown, yet so
loved by some people. I always mention how it has killed large
redwood trees in Eureka. A major job to remove it when it is 100
feet up a tree and a 3" vine.
It amazes me it still gets sold. Should be outlawed, sice it is
considered and invasive weed in most states and many countries.
HONEYSUCK can be a problem. That japanese stuff. But it
generally dies back some, and is rather easy to remove.
As for call Japanese honeysuckle wild, that gets confusing. It
is an invasive alien plant in the U.S. The WILD honeysuckle here,
in my garden is truely a wild plant, native and very nice. Not so
fragrant, but a nice chapparal flower. And requires no care at all,
unless I want to trim it back a little.

Cut and pull. Its a tough job. The stems can be cut thru and painted
with Round Up. But you still need to pull the vines off. It rips the
bark. It is a mess.
Worst part is the sap causes demititis, bad ichy skin. Nasty. So
use gloves and long sleeves. And bag things up and throw them away.

What I have seen people do is to cut it at the base and remove but left the
rest of the vine actually on the tree. I looks funny the first year but it
is dead and by the second year it starts to deteriorate and by tear3 it is
pretty much unnoticeable...saves the tree from a lot of trauma by loosing
its bark.

I've seen that too. Not goosd practice.
If the vines are around a branch or trunk it will still get
strangled.
I've never seen the bark stripped off. Just bits of it where the
rootlets attach. Doesn't hurt the tree any.

hi,
honey suckle can be very invasive the tree was not a good idea because of t=
he weight of the plant can pull the tree over much like bittersweet when it=
gets big enough. its great in a contained area and its not parasitic. but =
it must be kept trimmed and the runners pulled up.

That reminds me - when you said English ivy can damage trees - does
anyone know if that same is true with a honeysuckle vine? I have one
that popped up by itself at the base of one of my spruce trees a
couple years ago, and it's winding around the trunk. I would hate for
the tree to die.
