Thanks for the advice.
I knew about tobacco juice having grown up next to a good old
fashioned NJ truck farm (Schanck Farms in Wall Township). But the last
time I tried it the results were not satisfactory in combatting the
aphids attacking the houseplants but then again I didn't boil it and
used left over cigarette butts. Next season I'm planning on planting
the broccoli and cauliflower in 5 gallon buckets and growing them
under screens. I could actually see flocks of cabbage looper moths
last year flying in formation like B-17s dropping eggs on my hapless
cabbage family plants.
You would not believe how many slugs there are around this place. We
have an outdoor cat and I counted nine of them going after her food
one night. Some are so large they look like bananas with antennae. I
bought a 25 pound bag of swimming pool diatomacaecous earth so it
should last a while. I actually did have a toad in the garden. He was
pretty fat too. I spotted him under an eggplant and was overjoyed, now
if I could find about 100 more. The mosquitoes are also a big problem.
They are intolerable anytime after dark and can even be pretty bad
during the day. There is a swampy area nearby where they must be
coming from. I think the town needs to go in there and hose it down
with DDT. Calm down, just kidding. In any case I do think the town
needs to do something as It's a serious problem. Another use for BT?
I went to Home Depot today and asked if they had a leaf shredder in
the rental department. No, they don't. I'm thinking compost. I have
been running a compost heap with grass clippings and kitchen scraps.
This past weekend I went out and raked up a huge pile of leaves. I
know from experience and Mike McGrath that they need to be shredded to
break down at a tolerable rate. It kills me to see people throwing
leavers to the curb and I sometimes feel like picking them up but the
thought of what may have been spread on their lawns by lawn services
scares the bejeebers out of me. I guess I'll spread them out and run
over them with the lawn mower as suggested with Sue's newspapers but I
don't relish the work raking them up again. I need to build a proper
composter too instead of a heap. Work work work!

Alan
