I have been growing Vinca (Periwinkle) here and spent a lot of money
on the many plants. In late spring they send out nice purple flowers
and were doing quite well, except when weed grass, clover, and a few
other niusance weeds would grow amidst them. I sprinkled corn gluten
in and around the vinca, and by summer all the new shoots that were
sprouting as well as some established plants had died. I now have only
about 20% of the Vinca left, and will never apply it there again. I
did use the corn gluten in my strwberry patch however and it helps to
reduce weeds quite well. I guess Vinca runners are not going to grow
well with corn gluten. Strawberries send of runners too, but these are
baby plants that form at the tips, compared to Vinca runners sprouting
roots all along their runners. There is also a natural product called
Preen which has corn gluten in it, and you can give that a try if you
wish to reduce your ground cover. I don't want my ground cover to die,
because it grows on the side of a small hill, and helps to prevent
soil erosion, I have to replant some Vinca again next spring. The corn
gluten did kill off a lot of my expensive Vinca, and it took about 2-3
months for it to finish its deed.

Apply corn gluten
to the patch twice per year. In early spring, and after the summer is
over. After about 2-3 applications, the weeds will not sprout from
their seeds. I use it in my asparagus patch, and have been for several
years now. I don't see much of any weeds since, and it breaks down
natrally ino usable nitrogen. The 'gus plants love it an are very big.
After about 4 applications, you only need to apply a single dose per
year. Its safe enough that you can put down 10 times the recommended
amount and it will not harm most plants. My first applications made
the soil a bright yellow color, and once it rains the stuff creates a
protien barrier on the first 2 inches of soil that will block most
seeds of any kind from sprouting. The ONLY plant it doesn't work with
is Periwinkle (Vinca) and ground cover that sends off rooting runners,
as it will kill these plants.
Sorry, I beg to differ. My Periwinkle (Vinca) was nearly totally
destroyed by the corn gluten. Its ground cover that was planted about
4 years ago, and was well established. Although, near the edges a few
weeds would show up. I applied the corn gluten and nearly 80% of the
periwinkle suddenly died. Periwinkle usually grows in anything as to
soil and other conditions, but the applicaton of corn gluten had
caused the damage, and I don't expect the periwinkle to come back
again, like it was, for several years, unless I plant more. Yes, corn
gluten does prevent most seed germination, but could also affect some
plants, as I found out the hard way. Because periwinkle multiplies by
spreading out runners on the surface of the soil, it also has to deal
with the layer of protien that corn gluten creates. If the roots of
periwinkle have problems growing with the corn gluten treated soil,
its a sure sign its not a good thing to use on it. Because asparagus
does not send runners, and needs a LOT of nitrgen, it will thrive with
as much corn gluten you can give it.

Ken -- thanks so much for all the info. I love periwinkle in certain areas =
of my landscape (I, too, have lots of hills) but the folks who owned the la=
nd before I did had let it run wild ... in order to plant other things, I'v=
e been digging it out, and not getting all the runners the first time aroun=
d. So, it seems I'm ridding the same spots of periwinkle each year, but nev=
er finishing the job. *laugh*
So, in my case, I'm overjoyed to hear that corn gluten might do the trick! =
Now, if only it would work on English Ivy!

I wonder then if it would work on bermuda grass which spreads the
same way. Bermuda grass has taken over large patches in my garden
and it's the absolute dickens to get rid of.

Keep in mind that if its applied to the Periwinkle it may take some
time to work, as periwinkle sends out new runners, while also dieing
out in some of it 'mother' locations. Applications of a heavyier
amount might help if its applied twice per year. The next year, you
may not see any of the periwinkle, but like any weeds or plants,
survival of the fittest will prevail. A spray of a strong vinegar
solution will also burn it down too. Marshall Grain in Texas offers a
20% vinegar for this and is quite effective. Once a few days pass, you
can usually replant again. But if you want to reseed the area with
grass again, corn gluten will not allow it to germinate. Sometimes,
the protien layer (goes down about 2 inches) created by the gluten
will also prevent sod from taking root too.
