pitcher plant

updated thu 8 nov 07

I ran across what I thought was a good deal. My grocery store had
several North American Pitcher Plants that were marked down to $1.99
from $19.99.
I've never owned a carnivorous plant before this.
This is what I do know about them; bright sun, use distilled water,
treat like a bog plant, keep outside in summer, dormancy period in
winter.
Does anyone grow this plant? Please share any other info that would
help me to keep this interesting plant growing well.

JoAnn, go to cobraplants.com for the best information on growing your
plants. They have Care Sheets for all carnivorous plants.

Congrats, that is a FABULOUS deal! I have MANY carnivorous plants, I love

Joann, I live in northern California, zone 8b/9a, depending who you ask. My
Sarracenias live outside in freestanding tub bogs. They are 20 gallon tubs
sold at Lowes in the pond dept. I also have one of those hard shelled prefo=
rmed
ponds from Lowes. I mixed up a batch of 50/50 dried Canadian brown peat and
sand, and planted the Sarrs in this mix. In my climate I don't need to mulc=
h,
and I get rain all winter, so they just sit out there and do just fine. I
also have some Sarracenias just in plastic flower pots, and they get the sa=
me
treatment-they sit in plastic water trays so they have water all the time, =
and
just sit out there all winter.

Sarracenias are hardy to most of the US. You might need to mulch, depending
where you live. If you keep them in pots you might need to move them into t=
he
garage-it just depends where you live and how cold your winter gets. They
spread easily and flower freely in the spring. Totally rewarding. Right now=
all
of mine are temporarily wintering in the tubs because we are redoing a lot
of the backyard. When they are totally dormant in Jan or Feb, I'll transpla=

them back into their pond liner-hopefully all the pond/yard work will be do=

by then, lol. If I have time one of these days, I'll create a file in the
photo section and put my Sarracenia pics in there for you to see. :-)

Cyndi, I live in the western part of Oregon. Our winters have been
pretty mild the last few years, but you never know.
I put the Pitcher plants outside in their 4 inch plastic pots and in
a plastic container that will hold water. If it should get down to
the 20 degrees I will move them back under the covered patio or into
the garage. They look really healthy and I'm so excited about them
because I've never grown a carnivorous plant. If I had not gotten
help from this group I would have kept them in the house and wondered
why they died. :)
I really appreciate all the help.
