fragrantgarden re lemon grass

Hi everyone,
I have for the 1st. time successfully grown Lemon Grass from seed and have
about 5 small plants, 6" high in a 4" pot.
So, a few questions.
How soon should I seperate the plants into individual pots ?
Are they hardy enough to be left outside? Here in S.France we rarely get
snow but the night time temp. can get as low as -10' C, 14'F, and the Mistr=
al
can hit 80 m.p.h.for 10 days or so.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Mick.

When they have about three leaves, then into individual 2 =BD=94 pots. The
problem with Lemongrass and it=92s relative Palmarosa is that they are clum=
p
grasses, so it=92s hard to tell when to pot up from just the base. Follow a
height of 4X the pot width. When temps are to drop below Freezing, wrap the
base with old towels or blankets, depending on the size of the clump. I get
Temps in the low 20=92sF and usually don=92t wrap anymore. They come back f=
rom
the roots and core every Spring.

In my =91Panhandle Pat=92 album I have a pic of 2 and 3 yr clumps of Lemong=
rass
that I use as a semi hedge to keep the schoolkids from tromping across my

Hi,

I am originally from Asia but now live in Michigan (zone 5 to 6). It is VER=
Y COLD in the winter. I am wondering if I can grow lemon grass and bring it=
indoor for overwintering in the winter? I love the fragance when used in c=

Thanks,
Dave

They do well Indoors overwintering. The only drawback is it=92s height. Bac=
k
before Global Warming, I used to take a handful of stalks every Fall, rinse
off the soil and pot them up in Potting soil for overwintering. It=92s been=
10
yrs now that I haven=92t had to do this anymore.

While the gov=92t still lists my area as 8z, the last decade or so=92s temp=
s
have us now at 9z=85.

just a quick reply, since i don't know much about
lemon grass except that i am almost sure it will NOT
survive any freezing temperatures. I have the feeling
it might be somewhat easy to have in the house over
the winter, and I'd love to hear what other members
say about the plant. I have heard that you can freeze
the stalks for later use, too.

Nope. I plant in clumps of stems with root-bumps the size of my hand(glove
size 8 American). They grow like crabgrass, as long as they don't dry ou=
t
and have warm nights(which we have above 75F from the end of March to.last
night). I've never fertilized them and our soil is very sandy. Neighbor
dogs piddle on them occasionally though..

Well my questions on Lemon Grass certainly instigated some life back into

Thanks for the responses, but Frith, did those clumps really grow to those
sizes in just 2 - 3 years or are you also a fisherman :-)
Just off to re-pot my poor little things but I shall bring them indoors ove=

winter I think just in case.
Happy gardening,
