Any suggestions for treatment of yellow areas in my yard. Bahia grass.
I have fertilized with 16-4-8, didn't change a thing. Thanks in
advance. Annie

1. Air: If the roots aren't breathing well, it doesn't matter what you add
to the soil. So I aerate. Just poke some holes with a digging fork and thro=
w
in some potting soil or other compost to keep the holes open.
2. Water: If you have an irrigation system, it could either be missing that
area, or oversaturating it. Overwatering is more likely, as if it was
underwatering the grass would turn brown. By overwatering, I mean too
frequently to allow the water you've applied to dry down so the roots can
breathe. I'd be willing to bet those yellow patches are in low spots.
3. Food: If there is some sort of nutrient deficiency or excess in the soil=
,
it needs to be corrected by adding an amendment (for deficiencies), or
halted (for excesses). Your fertilizer sounds good for grass, but your soil
might be low in iron or some other vital element. If fixing the air and
water doesn't get it, have a soil sample analyzed by a lab.
4. Light: If there isn't enough light reaching those patches of grass, you
might need to reseed with something more shade-tolerant. You can feather th=
e
new grass into the old to avoid a sudden transition line.
5. Disease: If correcting the conditions doesn't change anything, then I
start looking at diseases. Somewhere near you there is a plant pathologist
or Ag Extension person who can tell what's going on.
6. Pest: Perhaps the neighborhood dogs have picked those spots as good
places to place their territorial markings.
My best guess is that your soil is saturated in those spots for too much of
the time. Grass likes a lot of water, but it also likes a good bit of
breathing time in between applications.
All the best,
Robert
