Well the best way is with a local herbalist. Failing that I'd suggest
getting a good, region-specific plant guide book. I don't know where you ar=
e
but there is a great series by 'lone pine press' (for Canada at least) that
have very clear pictures & descriptions as well as uses.
Off the top of my head- yellow dock, artemesia, dandelions, lamb's quarters=
,
amaranth, chickweed & plantain are all common 'weeds' that are useful for
medicine and/or food.

I've been identifying plants in my yard for over 10 years with the book
"North American Wildlife" by Reader's Digest. Once I identify a plant I go
online and read more about it. This book has little descriptions of how the=
plant
was used in the past.

For example it says that Hopi Indians extracted a blue dye from Larkspur an=
d
the settlers used this extract to make ink. It also says that Shakespeare
called them Lark's heels.
