cannas & peacock orchids? ((lisa))

Hi Lisa,

I think you could put both the cannas and the peacock orchids in pots that =
are self watering. They have a reservoir on the bottom and you can water th=
em well enough that it drains down to the reservoir. I have cannas in one o=
f those pots and they do fine as long as I keep water in the reservoir. Use=
well draining soil...I use Jungle Mix. Mine are in a very large container =
because they do multiply and need to be divided once a year. The peacock or=
chids have much of the same requirements. Both need lots of light. When you=
bring them in for the winter put them near a window that will give them lo=
ts of bright light. I am in Florida so I really can't say for sure that the=
y will flower during the time they are inside but I'm sure they will multip=
ly. I pull mine out every spring and divide the rhyzomes and put 3 back in =
the container and the remainder in my yard. This year I actually traded out=
the extras for other plants.

Hope this helps.

Barb

Subject: [TheRookieGardener] Cannas & Peacock Orchids?

HI everyone,

A friend of mine in California recently sent me some plants through the mai=
l. I'm in Ohio so of course my growing directions would be greatly differen=
t. He sent me both Cannas & Peacock Orchids - about 6 of each. From what I =
can tell on the internet I think I would need to either dig both of these u=
p each winter or grow them in pots & bring them inside through the winter. =
Does anyone in Ohio - zone 5/6 - have any experience with either of these p=
lants? I'm thinking of getting a couple pots and putting some of both into =
each pot. How big of a pot? And how many could I put into each pot? I was t=
hinking maybe 3 of the Cannas & 2 or 3 of the Peacock Orchids per pot. Then=
I'd go ahead and put them outside on the deck for now. When it is closer t=
o frost - probably October - I'd move them into the house. Also, should I p=
ut them into the basement then & let them go dormant? Or could I leave them=
in a sunny window and let them keep growing?

Thanks!
Lisa
