HI everyone,
A friend of mine in California recently sent me some plants through the mai=
l. I'm in Ohio so of course my growing directions would be greatly differen=
t. He sent me both Cannas & Peacock Orchids - about 6 of each. From what I =
can tell on the internet I think I would need to either dig both of these u=
p each winter or grow them in pots & bring them inside through the winter. =
Does anyone in Ohio - zone 5/6 - have any experience with either of these p=
lants? I'm thinking of getting a couple pots and putting some of both into =
each pot. How big of a pot? And how many could I put into each pot? I was t=
hinking maybe 3 of the Cannas & 2 or 3 of the Peacock Orchids per pot. Then=
I'd go ahead and put them outside on the deck for now. When it is closer t=
o frost - probably October - I'd move them into the house. Also, should I p=
ut them into the basement then & let them go dormant? Or could I leave them=
in a sunny window and let them keep growing?
Thanks!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
You're right, neither plant is hardy in your zone. My sis lives in
OH and I send her new cannas each spring. I'm in zone 7, and they do
not always survive for me. I'm an avid collector and last year I had
about 30 or so varieties. Our very wet winter decreased my
collection to about a dozen varieties.
Cannas need a lot of space. If they're watered and fed well, they
multiply like rabbits and can quickly outgrow their pots. So put
them in a pot that is big enough to allow them to multiply. It
doesn't take them long to settle in, grow and multiply if they like
their conditions. For winter, you could bring them in and continue
to grow them. They don't need a dormant period, just lots of water,
nutrients, and sun. But if you get tired of tending to them, you can
cut the foliage off and move them to a cool dark place and they'll go
dormant.
Peacock orchids do need a dormant period. They'll bloom and then
eventually the foliage will die after its absorbed energy for next
year's blooms. It's like a gladiola in that respect. When the
foliage dies back, trim it off and then put the peacock orchid in a
cool dark place til spring. These do not need a lot of water, like
the cannas do. Too much water may rot the bulbs. So you may not
want to plant the two together.

Hi Lisa...I am in 3 or 4 by the old zone map and 4/5 by the new. I dig my
Canna and Peacock Orchids in the fall after a good frost. Let them dry and
store in a cool dark place. I just put them in brn. paper bags with there
names on and put the bags in a box. A cool basement works best. When you di=
g
the canna's you will find the clump can be divided into many tubers. The
little bulbs on the Peacock Orchids can be save and planted next year but
won't bloom for a couple of years.
We all have the method that works best for us so when the others arrive you
will be able to find the one that works best for you.
Good Luck, Beverly

Hi Lisa,
I've never grown the peacock orchids before so I can't help you with those.
But the Cannas I've grown many times here in OH so I can share with you
about those.
If you plant Cannas outdoors, they will need to be dug up every year before
the first frost. I cut or break off all the foliage down to the rhizome,
knock off all the soil and trim all the roots down to about an inch or so
and store in a dry place at room temperature. I store mine in our heated
basement that doesn't get below 68 degrees. I plant the rhizomes out every
spring after Mother's Day weekend a few inches deep in full sun. It takes
mine from Mother's Day until July to bloom so I wouldn't even bother
planting them out this year because they won't have enough time to bloom
before you would need to dig them up again. It would take just as long to
bloom if you planted them in a pot and you'd still have to dig them up and
store them dry somewhere indoors as they need a dormant period in order to
start their growing/blooming cycle all over again.
My advice would be to just keep the Canna rhizomes dry somewhere until next
season. They'll be fine. Even if you do decide to go the pot route, I
wouldn't plant the two differnt kinds of plants together.
Hope this helps! :)
