While I have been doing gardening without pesticides for quite a
while, we are moving to a new place that has poison ivy growing on top
of poison ivy. Half of our acre-plus lot is covered in it, and I mean
*covered*. The only other understory plants are cat briar and that
awful honeysuckle that chokes everything (except, apparently, poison ivy!)
My question: does anyone know how long Roundup lasts before it breaks
down? They make a special formula for poison ivy that uses 2 different
herbicides, glyphosate and another I can't recall offhand.
There are a lot of bunnies and loads of songbirds (including
bluebirds!)plus a few deer, and I am hesitant, but desperate.
Does anyone have any experience or info?
Thanks-
Mary McInerney

Round Up braeks down in a couple weeks.
The broblem is that I think the OIL on the poison ivy would still be
a problem even after the plant is dead. That is what causes the
reaction. Even after the vines die you would still need to clear
them I assume. Could be you will still have problems.
They make good lotion stuff to put on your skin before you handle
the plants. It does seem to work.
It may be best to hire someone who does that kind of stuff. Oh,
that would be costly......

Mary,
I use Roundup(generic) or Cornerstone Plus(which is a much cheaper generic)=
on the farm. I have also used 2,4 D. I use it on sugarcane because it does=
n't harm it--only broadleaf weeds and vines. It IS labeled for use on sugar=
cane by the way-commercial sugarcane growers use it. However it is consider=
ed by many to be more of a health hazard than Roundup. It also works better=
, I think, on poison ivy and other vines than Roundup.
After killing the poison ivy, watch for resprouting and spray when tender g=
rowth is present. (I have found that it is not so easy to eradicate. It has=
seeds which are on/in the ground that can germinate later, also.) The ivy =
will then rot over a period of probably a few months depending on weather c=
onditions, etc.
You MIGHT consider cutting off the ivy at the trunk of the vine(for huge vi=
nes) and let it resprout before spraying ANY herbicide. This way it will be=
much easier to spray and cheaper. I've cut poison ivy with a chain saw whe=
re the trunk was a few inches in girth and the vines 75' long growing up a =
tree. (You don't have to touch it that way)Then sprayed the tender sprouts =
that came up later from the trunk. Easier for me.
Good luck.
