Hi Everyone! I am hoping someone might be able to give me some good ideas
for containers to use for vegetable gardening? I am looking for something,
or an idea, that would be inexpensive to employ. I am currently trying to
grow three tomato plants, which are growing very very slow. And I am also
attempting some 2 hills of zucchini (started from seeds), 2 hills of
crookneck squash (haven't started seeds yet), and a few hills of
pumpkins(haven't started seeds yet). The area is next to my building I work
in, which has shade in the morning, but full some for the rest of the day.
Automatic sprinklers pop on about every other day for about 25 minutes sinc=

they put out so much water. I was hoping to put the plants into a container
and fill it with potting soil since the soil is so bad, it is pretty much
all clay and I am sure this is why the plants aren't growing so well.
Anything I put into this comes out of my pocket but I thought it would be
fun to have a garden for everyone at work to enjoy. Any idea's would be
greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Becca

I am sure you know that tomatoes in a container need
watered at least twice a day. When I container garden,
I use coconut fiber for a growing medium I also use
seabird guano as a fertilizer. Also, I like to buy
plants that have not been pre-containerized. I will
place the root ball of the plant on the bottom of the
pot or as deep as I can plant it and still have 4
leaves above ground..... clip off all the bottom
leaves. As for inpensive containers, most towns have a
place that will sell the nursery pots...you just have
to make sure you are not going to moving it around a
lot. s for an idea for your 2 squash varieties.... try
using a trellis. If they are vine squash, they will
climb. Tomato cages are not that expensive and provide
a structure to climb on.
