The flowers look right, but does sylvatica have those very fine
leaves? What is the habitat, Colin? I've only ever seen it at the edge
of woods on limestone or on the coast.

Hi Gill/ Eva/ All

The habitat is a disused land filled - quarry - mining site with
lots of dry grassland , it is worth mentioning that type path
adjacent was crude lime chippings. It is the stretch along the
Calder and Canal between Brighouse and Elland so as you quite
rightly point out might be a Ph thing. (SSI) This is in Calderdale W
Yorks. Also observed ion grass Grass Vetchling and other vetches as
one might expect at this time of year. Lots of Leucorum vulgare and
Birds Foot Trefoil with Comon Blues etc

Best Wishes

Doesn't look quite right for Vicia sylvatica, e.g. should have more flowers=
,
and veiny rather than solid blue. Rodney

Sounds a good habitat for the alien Vicia villosa which is often in that
sort of company round the M25. It usually has purple flowers but books say
that can vary. Rodney

Hi all,
I'm with Rodney on this one, I think that the combination of branched
tendrils, lots of pairs of small leaflets and relatively small flowers
(but larger than V. hirsuta) make it look a lot like V. villosa.

V. villosa is a world wide "weed/crop", so it often turns up as a seed
contaminant.

Hello,

Interesting post re Vicia

Our local patch records the following species:

Vicia cracca TUFTED VETCH
Vicia hirsuta HAIRY TARE
Vicia lutea YELLOW VETCH
Vicia sativa ssp. nigra NARROW-LEAVED VETCH
Vicia sativa ssp. segetalis COMMON VETCH
Vicia sepium BUSH VETCH
Vicia tetrasperma SMOOTH TARE

I have not noted Vicia hirsuta and one to look out for.

Common species only:

Hi Colin

its V. hirsuta

The track is crushed sandstone overlaying an enginerred clay cap of a
landfill(domestic rubbish) on an area formerly used as a dump for PFA (Pulv=
erised
fuel ash) hence the interesting range of plants on this site. Called Cromwe=
ll
Bottom LNR and SEGI.

Cheers

Colin, I don't think V. hirsuta is right either, that should have the
flowers held well clear of the leaves - unless your photo has a
foreshortened view? Rodney

How big were your flowers? Isn't V. hirsuta quite tiny? I was
thinking yours was sort of the same size as bush or tufted vetch -
tare flowers here at least are only about half that size.
