weeds!

updated wed 2 may 07

Mary on wed 2 may 07

This year, the weeds arrived with a vengence.
My whole flower garden was packed with henbit and cheatgrass aka
wild oats. I have been pulling by the roots to get them out. It has
been big task! And not much fun.

Since the stems are so weak, I have had to take a shovel and losen the
soil and them pull up the weeds by hand. I have a combo of perranials
and annuals in this bed. I leave some bare earth for re-seeding.
My rosemoss, and my love in a mist. Unfortunately, because I have
had to disturb so much ground, I fear that what seeds may have taken
place, I ruined the chance for germination.

Rather than apply Preen, my nice bed just turned into a monsterous mess!!
I think I will add mulch around my perannials this year to avoid this in
the future.

Does anyone have any ideas, how to keep the weed seeds out, and my
flower seeds IN my beds? lol I know, silly question! I would just like to
have my seedlings come back and not spend money on plants. I still like
my annuals.

Welcome to the world of gardening. Pulling weeds is all part of gardening. =
I have Tall Verbenas that I allow to reseed, keep your bare soil mulched an=
d this will help keep the weeds down but even annual seeds will sprout in m=
ulch if you use a fine texture hardwood but mulch in the fall instead.

Shaped kinda like a hammer only one side of the metal end of it is a blade
that you can use to scrape weeds off the top of the soil (and if they're
little, it takes them out with the roots) and the other end is a claw type
thingy that I use to break up the top crust of soil, which also makes it
easier to hand pick out weeds. Believe me, it's a God send!!!

About the mulch, I just wanted to add my two cents... One thing you want to
remember about spreading mulch is that the roots of plants need to be
planted in SOIL, not mulch. Mulch has no nutrients in it until it breaks
down and plants planted with their roots in the mulch and not in the soil
below it won't last long unless those roots get to the soil! So, if you're
going to be spreading mulch and later down the road, you want to plant more
flowers, remember to either add some soil to your planting hole if you've
made the hole in mulch or dig down through the mulch to plant the flower in
the soil and not just in the mulch. Personally, I don't have ANY mulch in m=
y
beds except what they sell at our local bulk mulch place as 'Gardener's
Compost', which is half triple ground hardwood mulch and half compost. What
I love about it is you can plant right in it and it's a great way to start
to build up some good soil, which I desperately needed! For the last three
years, I've spread about 2-3 inches of it in all my beds and around all my
plants and worked it gently in because I've needed to build some good soil
in my beds. I'll continue to do this for a couple more years. And because I
move things around all the time and plant all the time, I don't want chunks
of regular mulch to contend with. The only down side to this Gardener's
Compost is that early in the season when the plants are all small, you can
see it and it just looks like bare dirt..lol.

Becki
