Yep, do it now. Get the water deep.
In the commercial groves they use little twirling mini- sprinklers.
Like drip emmiters, but they cast drops like 15 feet. It would be
easy to make a ring of thse, or maybe just one to water the entire
area under the dripline (that's how I've seen them) so the whole
root system would get water.
Or you could be like me, just make a ring/dyke around the tree. It
needs to be outside the dripline to work best. Arizona Master
Gardener book (which is online) says trees put roots out 150% to
200% of the dripline radius.
Trees use a lot of water. Its amazing how many gallons they suck
up and transpire. It you mak the basin for the tree you can just
measure the inches. Usually an inch a week is good. (Thats 52 inches
a year!) Prob'ly more than enough, but enough is not always
enough.
There's the highlights as I see them.
(Try calculating those gallons needed. There's a site on web to
give gallons needed, but I can't remember it...S.Fran. city
maybe. ... Then calculate the gallons comming out your hose/spklr
and ... So much easier to just make a shallow basin and fill it
with an inch or so.

I don't recall who makes them, but I have seen things
called "emitters" designed for container plantings and
roof gardens. Small gauge hose with valve on the end.
Run hose through garden, attach valve near plant.
Vavle release small amounts of water with precision
location over long period. waters deeply w/out
spraying and wasting. they use a similar system to
water the outdoor plants in las vegas.
