Hello,
Can anybody inform me of the legal position regarding spraying of herbicide=
s
(not spot weedkiller) in Local Nature Reserves, or if there are no legal
restraints, what is the voluntary code of practice?
And what are the remedies? Can the land owner (usually the Local Council or
agents employed by them) spray with impunity? Should I contact by Local
Councillor?
Cheers

Funny nobody else has responded to this in more than a week.
There must be a management plan for the LNR which gives some help in each
case, when it comes to sorting out responsibilities. I don't think there is
any answer which can be given to your question, applicable equally to all
LNRs. Rodney

Hello Rodney,
An interesting and helpful reply was posted at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/countrysidemanagement/message/3927
With Local Nature Reserves it appears that there can be two types of
Management Plans, a summary one or a thorough one.
I would not expect details to be specified in a summary plan, and even in a
thorough plan, the use of herbicides and insecticides might not be specifie=
d
and be left up to the Management Committee, or management person or group.
Local Nature Reserves, by definition are for nature and people.
As the people aspect is included in the definition, I would expect the
people to be consulted at some stage in the management of Local Nature
Reserves. Whether this should included the application of chemicals on the
land (other than spot painting stumps) seems to be a matter than is at the
discretion of the management team (unless it is a SSSI).
From experience of one management group, I would anticipate that for the
removal of proscribed weeds like Ragwort and Creeping Thistle, the
Management Group might not even be consulted. Even the selected of unwanted
plants may be at the discretion of the gardener. In other words this could
be personal preferences.
I have open mind and I would be interested on what other think from
experiences. My inclination is that there is ample room for serious mistake=
s
without some sort of clear cut procedures. I expect most Local Councillors
would not be very concerned, unless they received and understood complaints
from more than isolated objectors.
Cheers
