LadyJane,
I've found that 'pulling' the suckers up is only a temporary fix because th=
e
root of the sucker is obviously attached to the mamma plant. Where the root
breaks away from the Mamma it will grow again and quite possibly send out
two sucker plants instead of one. This is why I pick my blackberries and
raspberries at a local farm that grows them commercially back home. :)
The only 'controllable method' for home growing them that I've heard of is
to plant them in large containers sunk in the ground. Prune the canes back
to about a foot high in the fall.
In spring, after the ground thaws but before they break dormancy again,
lift them and do some root pruning as they will have become pot bound and
then re-sink the containers again.
This will solve the sucker problem.
This doesn't necessarily help you NOW though, does it? Is there any way you
can dig the suckers up and follow the root back to the mamma, dig the mamma
up and put her in a container? Until you get mamma in a container, you're
gonna continue to have suckers. :(
Becki

Hi all,
Oddly enough, my blackberry canes do not seem to do this. As of yet
(about 4-5 years since I first planted them), I haven't had any
problems with suckers...and I hope I don't.
I wonder if I have some mutant variety of blackberry?? If so, maybe
I can package it up and sell it and make a million LOL

You must have missed an earlier post of mine. We had a blackberry 'patch' o=
n
this property when we bought it in fall 2004. The previous owners had
planted it along a chicken wire fence as a deterrant to keep their large do=
g
in their yard (which seemed kinda cruel to me). The bed was about 20 feet
long by 4 feet deep full of old and new canes that had never been pruned.
It took me two years of regular Roundup treatments to get rid of it even
after digging up what I thought was all of the plants and roots. I STILL ge=
t
an occasional baby but I'm thinking these hopefully are what the birds brin=
g
in.
It's not a question of IF they get out of control, but more like WHEN.

LadyJane,
I've found that 'pulling' the suckers up is only a temporary fix
because the root of the sucker is obviously attached to the mamma
plant. Where the root breaks away from the Mamma it will grow again
and quite possibly send out two sucker plants instead of one.//
Hi all,
Oddly enough, my blackberry canes do not seem to do this. As of yet
(about 4-5 years since I first planted them), I haven't had any
problems with suckers...and I hope I don't.
I wonder if I have some mutant variety of blackberry?? If so, maybe
I can package it up and sell it and make a million LOL
