Hi Gardeners, There is a new open area in my garden. There was a
fence there but it was torn down. That has allowed me several more
feet of space in which to plant. Seeing this low light area yet to be
planted, does anyone have a suggestion as what ferns I might plant?
Thank you Jerry

Hi Jerry,
I take ferns from the woods and areas that are being torn down. They are
happy as long as they aren't in a sunny area. I don't know what types they
are, but if they are near your area, they will most likely grow.
They are so pretty in a garden! They really soften the area up quite
nicely.

Hi Gloria,
I dig them up before they are tall, but I've taken them when they were
fully out in leaf, too, only I make sure to get a powerful lot of root with
it so it won't even know it's moved. If you take some extra soil in
something, even better. You can't beat woods soil for your gardens, it's
awesome!
One thing with ferns, you can't pull them, they have a tough root system, i=
t
takes a lot of digging muscle to break through. I'd take them right now,
Gloria and keep them wet.
Let me know how it goes for you!
Love,
Denise

Pay attention to where you are. Some places will drop a big fine on
you for digging up plants. I mean Stae or County people. Find out
what the laws are about collecting plants and be descrete.
MAKE SURE you don't rip out too many from one place. Leave it
looking nice. The idea is to improve you yard, so don't misuse the
natuarl places.
Prob'ly not what you need to hear, but many people just have no
idea how they affect the forest and steal plants.

Yes, you both are right. I don't know the law in the States, but in PEI it
s ok to dig here, the only plant we're not allowed to touch is the lady
slipper.
But with the ferns, I do take in different places, I love where the ferns
are and love the area staying pretty, I just want to share the prettiness i=
n
my garden too lol plus the plants will be happy with some freedom instead
of being totally squashed in the area they are in .
Good idea to check to make sure where you dig from. What I like to do is
check areas that are being cleared. It doesn't make sense to me how people
can clear an area just to get the wood from it, when they are taking the
lady slippers too, they bulldoze these areas, and all the plants too, so I
go to the areas and find the plants and take them home to be safe. I don't
even care if it's the lady slipper, I'd take it if I found it and bring it
to safe keeping instead of shriveling up and dying where it was.
Love,
Denise

Do I Even Know?
Pay attention to where you are. Some places will drop a big fine on
you for digging up plants. I mean Stae or County people. Find out
what the laws are about collecting plants and be descrete.
MAKE SURE you don't rip out too many from one place. Leave it
looking nice. The idea is to improve you yard, so don't misuse the
natuarl places.
Prob'ly not what you need to hear, but many people just have no
idea how they affect the forest and steal plants.

Sounds like you should move those ferns.
The Japanese Painted Fern is really something. They have red and
frosty looking parts too.
I just wanted to make sure nobody goes out to rip the forest
apart. However, as pointed out the logged and to be cleared areas
need to have some plants saved too. Usued to be a big thing when I
lived in Humboldt, to go save plants from soon to be logged areas.
