Hi ST,

> Hope I've been thorough enough-- let me know if I've left something out.

Thank you very much for your detailed summary; it is extremely useful
information. I'm sure that it will help many list members in their
future struggles against weeds. :-)

Just two questions:

1) Where exactly are you, geographically?

2) Were/are any of your weeds the type that have underground
rhyzomes, or Bermuda grass?

Unless you object, I will be reporting your results to Bob Webster on
his radio show this coming Saturday morning.

Warm regards, Joe

On Joe's request, I'm posting my results using 5% vinegar as a weed
killer. It's been about 12 days since I'd begun spraying weeds with
the 5% vinegar/orange oil/liquid soap mixture, and all the weeds I
sprayed are dry & brown. Here's a rough breakdown:

Day 0: Sprayed weeds in afternoon (partly sunny, about 60F, windy).
No immediate effect was observed.

Day 1: (overcast). Did not spray. Weeds look wilted & blotchy, but
still green.

Day 2: (partly sunny, 65F) In areas with more sun exposure, weeds were
totally brown. Sprayed again.

Day 3: (partly sunny, 65F) All sprayed areas brown. Sprayed same
areas one more time.

Day 10: Hadn't sprayed since Day 3. Same areas are still brown. In
one spot, some green leaves appearing.

In general, the weather here has been partly cloudy, rather windy,
with highs averaging about 65F. Cooler than normal for this time of
year, for us. We're even getting a little rain every week or so,
which is unusual in April.

So, the 5% does seem to work pretty well for the weeds I have here.
I'll probably continue to use it, since it's cheaper & readily available.

Hope I've been thorough enough-- let me know if I've left something out.

Hi Joe,
Glad to help!

> 1) Where exactly are you, geographically?

I live in San Carlos, CA. We're about 30 min. south of San Francisco.
Our weather is warmer & sunnier than SF and other coastal areas, but
not as warm as areas further inland. I think I'm zone 9 or 10 -- we
have many microclimates here, so I'm still trying to figure it out.
I'm told our soil is clayey and slightly alkaline, but I've not done a
soil test, myself.

> 2) Were/are any of your weeds the type that have underground

I know I have a type of grass-like weed with rhizomes, but looking at
some photos of Bermuda grass, it doesn't seem to be the same thing. I
wish I knew my weed types.

And, I can't say for certain that the weeds I sprayed had rhizomes--
perhaps I should dig them up to be sure? I can take some photos, if
that would help.=20

Of course, I'm so glad my little test was useful enough to report! I
would be happy to run a more rigorous study, if that would help.=20

I live in Memphis, Tn and most of the south has Bermuda grass, it is a very evasive grass, but does kill out other weeds and makes a very soft, carpet like lawn. But keeping it out of the garden and flowers beds is always a pain. Most of the time pulling it up near my beds or garden works, but is a daily routine. The one thing I found is that the lasagna garden method, around my garden keeps out the Bermuda. I have never tried the vinegar on it yet and will, because my husband complains about it in the beds, but I won't let him use roundup on my yard. I have pets also. I believe their is always a solution to the chemical warfare that most people use in their yards. And I am willing to try anything, because I don't want chemicals around my plants or pets.
