foam pots and filler

I always stuff the bottom of these pots with something like that, I think I
used styrofoam in the last pots I did because they are 3 feet tall,
certainly don't need to fill the entire thing with soil.

Hi Amy,
Welcome to our group.
I do that all the time. Fill the pot just a little less than half full of
packing peanuts and the rest good potting soil. The potting soil will settle
a bit around the packing nuts, so I water this first and after it has
settled, plant as usual. You may have to add a few handfuls of potting soil
here and there around the plants over the season as the potting soil does
want to sink. Also because the pot is only half full of soil, it will need
to be watered more often than if the whole pot was potting soil.

Hi,

I've been using the packing peanuts for years. They do make good aeration f=
or the plants so the soil can't become too compacted, and also make the po=
t more light weight. I add soil on top of that. I have recently started put=
ting the packing peanuts in onion and other mesh bags and tie the end with =
a twist tie, or in a knot, and place on the bottom of the flower pot, so wh=
en I change soil sometimes in the future they're not going everywhere makin=
g a mess.I haven't tried foam flower pots yet. What ever flower pot I get, =
even the hard resins ones I always make my husband drill a few more drain h=
oles in it. They don't seem to put enough drain holes ( in my opinion), in =
flower pots and big planters.
It almost broke his drill a couple times.

I just bought a few of those huge pots maded out of that foam stuff. I
have heard that you can put packing peanuts on the bottom of a big pot
and then top it with dirt so that the pots arent too heavy. Does
anyone have any info or knowledge on this? I dont want to waste my
time and kill any plants I try to put in them.

Thanks

Amy

Make sure it's the foam type packing peanuts. They have some packing peanuts
made of natural materials or biodegradable or something ,so they break down
and eventually dissolve when wet . But it turns all gooey and stuck together
in a clump and I don't know how good it would be good for the plants as far
as leaving the soil soft, fluffy and aerated.. I experimented with it once
and didn't like the results.

Cheryl,
What a great idea to put the packing peanuts in mesh bags!!! DUH! I like
that idea lots better than havng to go on a packing- peanut- scavenger- hunt
later..lol.
