Hi Gina,
Welcome to our group.
You said you and your husband 'try to make the lawn look thick and green
every year' but you didn't say what steps you were taking to do that. That
might help our members give better advice if they had more details.
Thanks!

I have floratan grass in the lovely state of Florida. But I have a
problem. My husband and I try to make the lawn look thick and green
every year with no prevail. Our lawn always seems to burn up due to the
sun. If anyone has any suggestions it would greatly appreciated. Thank
you!

It would help to know what, how much, etc fertilizer you've used.=20
And how much watering you do. Deep watering works much better than
lots of little shallow watering.=20
I've never heard of 'floradan' grass. Is it a special variety?=20
What's the exposure? Full sun I assume, but is it facing south on
a slope ?? Are there reflective surfaces nearby, like brightly
painted walls?=20
A thick green lawn is nice, but sometimes you have to accept that
your conditions/location just won't allow it.=20
Are there local golf courses? Have you talked with the grounds
keepers? Could be helpful. Or the crews at local sports feilds?=20
Have you had your soil tested????? Someties trying to get
things to grow using fertilizers and such can create problems in the
soil.=20
I've got lousy soil. The guy at the fertilizer story said, "you
don't have soil, you have dirt," when I told him where I live. But
planting native grass (red fescue) and clover has really made it
nice. And I do not mow. I let the rabbits do that job.

I had to find out what this grass is... A variety of St Augustine.=20
And I found these links to some hopefully helpful sites. The
Universities usually have good info. So if there is one near you
find them on line or go visit.=20

First place to start is to check out the laws in your state. If you
are not licensed then start there. I think Texas has favorable laws
for you.
"Florida Lawn Handbook" is the bible on St Augustine turf in my
state. It written for the beginner but still used by the old timers
and you can buy it for about 15.00 from amazon.com.
Texas A & M has a good web site and so does U of Fla. they work
together. In fact Texas A & M and U of Fla. worked together to
develop Floratan in the 70's. Floratan is to most widely used St
Augustine.
