where to buy pots....

updated sat 24 feb 07

Shannon on wed 7 feb 07

I am starting up a small nursery and was wondering if any of you all
had any sources for plug trays and 4 inch pots. Also kinda new to all
of this but what soil mixes do people tend to use for plug trays and
when they pot up to larger 4 inch pots?=20

Thanks,

Shannon

I don't know how many you need, but I get mine from ebay. Just watch
the shipping on them. Alot of vendors are upping the shipping so they
don't have to pay ebay so much and to cushion the low prices they might
get for their products. This is alot of different products on ebay, not
just the ones for greenhouse equipment.
It is people mainly selling off their extra's and discontinued stuff.
So the lots won't be exact sometimes. But remember your starting out so
I'd check the local greenhouses for their used pots. Be sure to clean
ththem good before you use them. I got a bunch from ones around here.
Until they found out I was going in business with them. Then that
stopped, ha ha.

Shannon,

For small quanities, I have chose to use A.M. Leonard....
www.amleo.com.
Thay have a wide variitey & ship most orders UPS.

Word of advise....you better hurry....the rush is soon to come...lol.

As far as soil mix....Premier ProMix is usually considered the top
of the line....my advise...watch your per cu. ft. price...they varry
widely, depending on packaging & maker. Hope this has helped a
little.

American plant products is a new one to me. Do they have a catalog? I notice they don't have any online sales or prices...

Here's my 2 cents worth....

Unless you are buying only a few flats and pots....these prices are
nearly double what others such as A.M. Leonard charges. For example:

1020 web trays/50ct....$48.00 here...AML...$26.49.

BUT...they sell case quanities...not 1 or 2 pcs.

But if you read on, you'll see that for anything over $25.oo, you take off =
15%. Better yet, anything over $75.oo you get free shipping. By the time yo=
u figgure it all in, they're pretty close.

IMHO, I also found them to be easier to deal with than some of the others. =
However, I must say I haven't dealt with many others yet, as I'm always loo=
king at price.

Here's another idea if funding is a problem...
Try Freecycle. www.freecycle.org
Join the group that is closest to your home. Folks are ready to give
away items like these free. I have picked up all I needed for my own
use, here in the Northeast. As stated in an earlier post, be sure to
clean them well prior to using. Steve in Mass--- In

I gave away free seedlings last year on Freecycle. Not sure if I'll do it
again or not. The response was huge, but people didn't show up when they
said they would, after I'd made arrangements to be here at their
convenience. It was quite a bother.

What a shame that people won't even show up for something, free or not, a=
fter promicing to be there. What kind of seedlings were they? As for giving=
away something free, they would need to meet my scedual, not me meeting th=
eirs. Next thing they'll want you to deliver them in person. LOL _._,_.___
