cardboard as weed control

Hi Group,
Has anyone ever tried laying cardboard down for weed control which is
covered with straw?

I am thinking about doing the square foot garden this year rather than
long rows and read that this is a good way to control weeds between
sections.

Our garden is about 30 ft deep and 160 ft long. We have estimated it is
about 1/3 of an acre of garden space. My goal is to get more production
out of the space and do a bit less cultivating.

I am also considering spacing plants closer to help with weed control
and growing more things upright on trellises.

Thanks for your viewpoints and opinions.

HI Susan,
I've never tried cardboard for weed control but I do know that it makes
a great slug and sow bug trap. You just lay it down overnight and in
the morning pick it up to discard the bugs that have hid underneath it.
As for using it under the straw mulch, it isn't really needed if you
have a thick layer of mulch.

Yes I use it to help layer the garden and to hopefully bring earthworms. I never picked a weed all last garden season. I also didn't need to remove it cause it breaks down in the soil. I layered cardboard then leaves then cardboard and what was left of my compost went on top of that. Some people that use this method cut holes in the cardboard to allow for the seedling to go I didnt do it that way but my veggies all grew fine.

Good luck
