JoAnn , I just did the same thing - bought 3 Amaryllis at Home Depot that were marked down - they were growing and blooming in pots with no soil, all twisted and banged up. I brought them home, potted them up and they are growing and blooming new flowers.
I would take all the wet soil from around the roots and start over. Hope your Thankgsiving cactus make it !!

Hi JoAnn and all,
Good for you! (and for the cacti). I did the same thing only the ones
I bought were utterly bone dry, poor things (from IKEA). Your strategy
for drying out your wet/stinky ones is very good. I bet the papers or
paper towels will really help them dry out. That's a very good strategy
and I'm sure your new plants will thrive for you.
Do keep us posted. Who else is purchasing some post-holiday bargain
plants??
Take care,
Grant

Subject: [Houseplants] Thanksgiving cactus
Our local grocery store had two Thanksgiving cacti left from the
Christmas plants. They were in 4" pots and marked down to $2.00.
They felt really really wet, sure enough, when I got them home I turned
them out of their pots and they were so water logged and stunk. I set
the root ball and all on paper towels and have them setting out of
their pots for 2 days now and they are still wet. I will repot them as
soon as they dry out some. The top part of the plants (don't know what
to call them, not leaves LOL) look really good and they are very firm.
Anyway, hope they make it.

I root mine in dirt. Just break off a few sections & stick them in
dirt. I think it's less messy this way.
