I ha ve a Thanksgiving cactus that has been with me for 20 yrs. All of a sudden it is colapsing. The thicker stems with the bark are dropping. I am very sad at the prospect of losing this old friend. My question is - what is the best way to root cuttings ? In dirt or water ?

I would let it dry for a couple of days to prevent the cuttings rotting at the base, then root them in compost with plenty of grit added for good drainage.
All the best with it - I lost some in what might be the same way last summer - I had watered them too well and they rotted at soil level. The other possibility that occurs to me is grubs eating the roots - check through the soil before you dispose of it, and if that's the case, water from the base as the grubs like moist soil surfaces.
