Sue,

I noticed your banana shrub photo and I'm fascinated. Does it require
the kind of summer heat that we in the Bay Area don't get? I did a
bit of research and the shrub seems to be in the magnolia family. I'd
like to find a flowering shrub that doesn't grow too high or wide and
that can take sun as well as some thick shade for a few hours a day.

Barbara - by banana shrub, do you mean michelia? If
so, there is a very old one in my garden in Oakland
that blooms every year and is pretty much neglected.

Well, I get a lot more sun than you do in Berkeley, but mine is against the house on the north side, so it doesn't get our intense sun or heat as much. It smells so very wonderful so you want it in a place where you can smell it. I just love it and I do nothing to it now that it is established. It is about 10 ft. tall, but I have never really pruned it for height. I really don't water it much either. I do prune it for shape when it gets in the way of the walkway. But that is about it. I bought it in about a three gal container and it was more expensive than normal 3 gal plants. Well worth it in my opinion! I love it!!!! Sue
I just sent my picture to Dave's garden.

Merry, I saw a photo from Sue labeled, "banana shrub" on our yahoo
website. I did a bit of research and it seems that michelia is the
Latin name and that there are several different kinds. Nice to know
that it's growing so well in Oakland. Is it in a warm, sunny spot--of
which I have none? It seems to be related to magnolia.

Barbara - my plant, which looks to me like michelia
figo, is against the fence facing northeast and is
practically behind a Japanese maple tree. It doesn't
get all that much direct sun, or probably wind either.
Of course Oakland is a little warmer than most of
Berkeley. You are welcome to come see it and take
chunks of it to try propagating - I ignore it, and it
grows and blooms.
