I think I know the type of trees you all are talking about - I
believe Stark Brothers Web site has this type. I had wanted to order
those a while back, but apparently these would not fruit in zone 9 -
not very surprising since few apples do - I wonder is that how the
expression "you can't mix oranges and apples" came about? :-)

I am only going to quote from a portion of the text. You can read
the rest at the site.

"Save garden space by growing up instead of out. Columnar apple trees
form a single trunk shaped like a spire. Trees will grow eight feet
tall but only two feet wide. Fruit develops on short branches or
spurs on the trunk. Plant at least 18 inches apart.

Both genetic dwarfs and columnar varieties can also be grown in patio
planter boxes. Plant two or more compactable varieties for good cross-
pollination."

P. Allen Smith says that for right now apples are the only fruit tree
available as columnar trees and are a bit pricey at around $20 to $30
for a starter tree.=20

I wondered if anyone had experience with these because sometimes with
such things wood is weaker, or branches have problems in
storms...things like that. Still would be nice for folks doing
container gardening, eh?=20

If you're growing in the north, Miller's sells some nice example
of these.
