ALOHA tu lips
did your readings tell you why only the miniatures did well..
Well.. I've grown roses in containers for years... right now the
first of October almost... I bet I have hundreds of flowers on my
roses.. I
grow maybe 5 rose bushes now... all in containers.. and all grown on my
rooftop.. no pictures here..such a shame..or I'd show them to you
today..

From what I remember it had something to do with the size of the
container? Not enough room for them to grow? So they stay dormant?
This being from Sunset Container Gardening ad from Ortho's All about
Roses.
ALOHA OH I see... well let me expand that for you.. nothing grows real
well
in too small a container..roses are indeed no exception... so no Bonsai
roses I guess.. I've full sized bushes...about 7' tall..and a New
Dawn... a
lovely old climber.. it grows 10' on each side of the roots.. and is in
flower
all of the time... the real knock out bloom for ND is in the spring
however...
but now there are maybe 100 flowers..of a smaller size than the spring
flush
of bloom.. Gordon

I responded to that that only miniature roses do well in
containers, in other words not full sized roses.
ALOHA OH 2 lips..
It's you that's spreading that malarkie then... Please... let
me help you understand...full sized roses do magnificently in containers...

Are we speaking only about roses here???
If so that I can't be sure of but I use a lot of container planting
including vegetables because of out water situation here. We are in the
middle of a drought and to keep my garden going with exotics they are
in containers of all sizes grouped or single often bedded up in a mulch
pile to keep the pots insulated. Every thing is happy and well.

-I suspect normal roses would be fine as well. The trick is to get a
good sized container and make sure the pot does not cook in the sun.
If necissary stand the container in something else such as a painted
polystyrene box. This could then be filled with wood shavings or
similar to keep the pot cool. The pot itself needs suitable soil feed
etc for roses. Given that here the roses seems to grow any old where
(cooltemp climate) I can't see why big roses would not flourish.
