marine biology as college major was another weed id

Sean sounds like he knows exactly what he wants to study in college. That
is definitely a good thing when most students enter college with not a
clue, often taking a combo of general education and "blow off"- easy-
courses before settling on what they want to do. College 101. My
neighbor's husband majored in marine biology (about 15 years ago) and he
now holds a managerial position at Verizon. Marine biology jobs are
scarce. Could Sean possibly concentrate his studies on a different bio
program and minor in marine bio? Back when I went to school, no one told
me french was not a lucrative major. If I had gone to the business school
portion of my school, I at least would have some marketable skills for when
I started to look for a job after the children were old enough for me to go
back to work. Of course, this road is not likely one that Sean would
take. He sounds bright and ambitious, so whatever he chooses, he will
probably succeed even if it won't be a career as a marine biologist.

Sean has wanted to be a marine biologist since he was 7. He's just the type
that will probably stick to it though I know that's rare. I changed my major
from biology to math to history to English and then finally ended up in
English education with minors in math and history and lacking two courses
for biology. My mom at the end of year 4 said, "Isn't there SOMETHING you
can just get a degree in quickly?"

We know the chance of his becoming an actual marine biologist is slim
given the lack of funding. I've warned him that he's going to have to work
extra hard. He is a hard worker and he's bright and he loves challenge so I
know he'll be able to do it if he doesn't give up on himself. But yes, I'm
hoping he'll branch out so he can have a career in something else if marine
biology doesn't pan out. I've hinted that we could use a vet in the family
... to no avail : ) He is the type who doesn't really care about clothes,
cars, etc and he's prepared to make a small salary as a marine biologist.
Cool thing is, he's fairly brilliant in chemistry and very well versed in
biology. He blows me away with all he already knows. Its possible he'll
actually meet his goals.
