Hi Val,
When I checked out your posted photos - the first thing that popped in
my head was ground ivy. I googled it and found this page -
http://ipm.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/glehe.htm
I think this may be it. It mentions that it has a mint like odor and
that sometimes it is confused with mallow - 2 things you had mentioned.
It also looks like your photos.
Here is a link on how to control it - including a recipe for using
Borax to control it without using harmful herbicides.
Hope this helps. I empathize with you - I have wild strawberries,
bermuda grass, and thistle to contend with - but I have been keeping
after all of them (pulling, pulling, pulling) and I have noticed some
improvement.

Our gardening season hasn't begun and I'm already feeling
discouraged! I have 8 raised beds--well, not too high yet. There is
some kind of weed in there that is defeating me. It has long roots
that go everywhere. Around the edges of the beds, there are leaves
with a fragrance--someone thought mallow. Last year, I covered them
with newspaper, leaves and compost. I kept cutting back the parts
that crept over the edges. This year, those roots have made a thick
mat all through the beds. On one bed, I tried lightly raking the
surface but discovered this stuff is all through the earth. I am so
frustrated I'm ready to quit trying to garden completely!! I had
thought I was finally getting somewhere with my soil--lots of worms
around--but I can't see any vegetables surviving a mass of roots like
this. Is there any solution for this or should I dig out all the
earth and start over--or just quit! Any help--or even sympathy--
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ildiko. Everyone thought it looked like this, especially the first
picture. It's good to put a
name to the enemy at least! Was there supposed to be another link with info
on getting rid of it?
