My ex once put slug bait out - which my cat ate. There was no antidote. So before you put something like that out, check with poison control.

The least expensive slug bait I've found that WORKS is from Walmart. Ask for
it there.
The beer thing only works for the alcoholic slugs that don't know any
better. The regular slugs prefer Hosta leaves but are deterred by the
delicious but poisonous to THEM slug bait which you sprinkle around the base
of your plants. Get some fast before they destroy all your hostas. One can
of it lasts me all season long. It only takes a little per plant and you can
reapply every 2-3 weeks to kill off the newcomers from the neighborhood. I
had forgotten to put some down myself until yesterday when I saw the first
sign of their damage on two of my hosta plants. Welcome wagon to the
rescue!!..lol.

Thanks for the advice. I actually saw the beer thing in a Time/Life gardening book my hubby bought me. It seemed about as good as the whole castor oil to ward off moles thing. I haven't been able to get rid of those either! Since going to Walmart will give me an excuse to poke through their "clearance" daylillies it sounds like a good plan! Thanks!

Beer does work for slugs. But ya can't expect to get them
all, 'specially when there is other yummy stuff for them to eat.
With the castor oil you need to really soak it in deep. It worked on
my Mom's gophers (for a while).
The liquid slug bait is what I found works best. But I had a cat who
liked to eat it too. Made hime sick, but he still went to lick it
off his paw. Strange animal. I wonder wher he moved to.
Anyhow, the best thing is to go out and just squash those yucky
slugs. Or put down some rolled newspapeer for them to hide in and
collect them in the morning. Works for earwigs too.

I went to check on my lupines yesterday only to discover some of
the
leaves looked like lace. Last night I checked them again and they
are
covered in SLUGS at night. Any recommendations on how I can keep
them
off my plants? I read somewhere you can put a saucer of beer in
the
flower bed and it will attract them. Just what I need...drunken
slugs
mirauding through my foliage! Any hints would be highly
appreciated!

I found slug stuff at Lowe's today which says it's pet friendly. We have 3 dogs (2 of whom are about as smart as a bag of hammers) so I needed VERY pet friendly. I'll let you know if I still have slugs or if I have frothy green piles of goo (I'm hoping for the goo).

Could you tell me please if what you are talking about, other then the beer, is okay to put out around pets and wildlife? I don't want to kill any of my songbirds, or my snowwhite cat that stays outside? Thanks loads! These slimey things have made my life miserable ever since I moved here 5 1/2 years ago.
