plant and a snake

I've uploaded a photo of a plant that is growing next to the barn on
the property we purchased last year. It resembles a Holly Hawk, but
has very small flowers.

Also, a picture of a snake. The only snake I am able to identify is a
rattler and I'm told I should not be killing off the good snakes, but
when it's me or the snake, well we all know that one!

I hope someone can enligthen me on both questions.

Sara:
The plant looks like a Verbascum. Yours in particular looks like the
picture I have in my Garden Plant Encyclopedia: Verbascum chaixii f. album
*Nettle-leaved Mullein* Rosette-forming, semi-evergreen perennial producing
long-stalked, ovate-oblong, *rounded at bottom tapering to point or a long
stretched out oval* gray-hairy, mid-green basal leaves 2-10 inches
long...saucer shaped , white flowers with mauve centers. Perhaps this
picture can help better than my description
http://www.robsplants.com/plants/VerbaChaix.php.

As for the snake, it looks like it could be a Common Kingsnake, though I am
not as good at identifying snakes. It would help to know in what state you
are located. My Field Guide to Reptiles Amphibians from the National
Audubon Society describes it thus: A large chocolate brown to black...with a
highly variable back and belly pattern. Light centered scales may form
distinct crossbands, chainlinks, lengthwise strips, blotches or speckles on
the back. Belly ranges from plain white to heavily blotched with dark
pigment to black... Diverse habitat... eats snakes incl rattlers,
copperheads and coral snakes, lizards, mice, birds and eggs.

regional color variations with the pictures on this page

Hope this helps...but don't quote me on the snake stuff!!
