Hi to everyone,
I live in MI and am extremely alergic to poison ivy. I just got it
again. Looked all around my yard for any sign of it and could find
nary a leaf. Is it posible to catch it on the wind or maybe from an
animal passing thru my yard? Also I use straight amonia to dry it up
and take away the itch it has worked better for me than all the sprays
and such but I'm alway up for new suggestions. Will be posting pics of
my yard soon till then keep your hands in the dirt, and the sun on
your face :)

Unfortunately the active ingredient produced by
injured plants, rushdiol, can remain active on
gloves and tools for years. The good news is, the
absolutely sovereign cure for poison ivy is the
juice of the crushed leaves and stems of the Jewel
Weed. Also known as Touch Me Not because of the
way the flower explodes and shoots a seed out when
touched. Jewelweed inhabits the same ditches and
roadside embankments that Poison Ivy does and is
positively identified by it's tender juicy stems.
Just mash them up into a poultice and apply
directly to the effected area for 15-20 minutes.
The rash will turn bright red and begin healing
almost immediatly.

Good luck.

Jen,
I have gotten PI from the stuff blown up by a mower, so you can get it from
the air. I have heard you can get it in the lungs by breathing the smoke
when it burns, but thankfully haven't had that experiance myself.

I also used to keep goats. They loved the PI, and loved me too. After they
nibbled the PI, they liked to nibble me and give me a rash. No, I doubt they
knew it gave me a rash, but there it was anyway.

I have long heard about jewelweed, but it doesn't grow in my yard, and
poison Ivy does.

Also, you'll get great results with dandelion. It'll stop the itch in just a
few minutes and a sore will dry up quickly, in a few days. If I grab some
poison ivy or oak while pulling weeds, I'll walk over to some dandelion and
rub it onto my hands. Then you'll not itch or breakout. An old Indian told
me about using dandelion. He certainly knew his weeds. LOL

Every time you get into poison ivy it makes the next
time easier to get. A pet going through it then you
petting it will expose you. You putting on a sweater
that had been exposed to poison ivy months ago will
still expose you.

If you are sensitive to poison ivy, you are also
sensitive to poison oak poison sumac.

Never burn poison ivy or its cousins, even if they
have been dead for a year. The toxic oils will rise
with the smoke so that you breath them into your
lungs. You can easily die of poison ivy induced
pneumonia.

And now is where I step in it!
The ONLY time I feel that a synthetic herbicide MIGHT
be forgivable, is when a person is extremely sensitive
to poison ivy. IF, you choose a synthetic herbicide
use roundup with a surfactant IE 1 tsp per gallon dish
washing soap or 1 tbs per gallon molasses. Miracle
Grow at 5 times the suggested rate will also increase
the killing force of roundup. Roundup will only work
on actively growing ivy. Yes, you will probably have
to repeat.

I do not use roundup! ALL of the other synthic
herbicides are far more dangerous. This doesn't mean
that roundup is safe. It only means that ALL of the
other herbicides are extreemly worse.

Be careful

Thanks, but I don't need to treat the yard I just need to be more
careful myself and wash after I weed. Still have not found any in
the beds or lawn so hopefully it was just a fluke - wind, animals or
such. Thanks for the info .....always useful.

Thanks to you both I will use these next time I think I have been
exposed....still have not found any PI in the yard. Must have been
on the wind or stray animal.
