Not gathered from the wild, but grown in a nursery from stock.

I was out today capturing some photos of Purple-fringed Orchis. We are =
undecided as to whether it's the greater or lesser. The bloom time is =
wrong for lesser, but it has the characteristics of the lesser. I'm =
going to post it to PaWildflowers and see if we can confirm which it is.
Lee Ann
yeah that may be but he got them somewhere. Maybe they can provide some. =

some
wonderful photos last week.

I haven't had time/access to a car with Steve's current shifts, to go
looking for the others. We have quite a variety of wild orchids, three or
four in our yard growing freely, not planted by us. None include slippers. I
adore them but can't get the neighbours interested enough to realise the
grass is of lesser importance, they grow in the grassy verge along the
pavement. I have a book, privately printed, on the wild orchids of Nova
Scotia and it is very interesting. I should see if the orchid society of NS
has a copy or if they want this for their library. Mine is from a hand typed
( from the bindery,) and it has some of the original photos in it, ie the
snap shots!. I have so much stiff to clean out.

We used to have Spiranthes lucida growing on our property in the '70s. =
Ours was the only location they were known to exist in our county. But =
the pond they grew beside dried up over the years and the resulting =
shift in plant life choked them out. They are really tiny orchids in the =
ladies-tresses group. We also have Helleborine orchids popping up =
everywhere, which are non-native and fairly common. Still very pretty =
when you get up close and personal to them. I think I'll walk the =
property today and look for anything new that might have shown up.
That book must me fascinating to see! If your orchid society doesn't =
want it, I bet Jim Bissell of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History =
would be interested.

I hadn't thought of a museum. The natural history one in Halifax might too,
then if they aren't, I might check with your guy. I would hate the book go
to waste. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry Lee Ann & Marg
The only pink lady slipper I have are the ones in my raised bed. They
are doing fine, but... will not be dividing for some years to come. I kind
of quit selling pink lady slippers for no one will follow planting
instructions and pink slippers are very touchy about transplanting. No sense
in killing them.
They are out there in tissue culture, other methods of propagation. Try
Vermont Lady Slippers.

I had a beautiful one from my Aunt's garden. I kept it going for a couple of years, but alas, that was part of the yard that got flooded and I lost it. I have a pic of it on my webpage, but the pink colour on the top petals didn't really show up in the photo:

I was just thinking...I was mistaken in saying it was from my Aunt's garden. She had pink orchids in her garden (wonder what happened to those now - really wished I'd gotten some of those) and I had asked her for some, but I don't think she trusted me enough to give me some, so she sent me a plant that was actually from a nursery. Don't remember the name of the nursery though. Likely my Aunt purchased it at Hole's.

Marg is right. This is a Showy Ladyslipper. The pink have a pink pouch =
and brownish petals. We have the Showy variety growing in Wattsburg Fen, =
about a half hour's drive for me. Magnificent stand of them.
The only Pink Ladyslippers I've seen were in Allegany State Park in NY. =
They were growing in a pine grove, fairly dry land. I went back the next =
day and someone had picked every one of them, and then left the flowers =
lying in a bunch on the ground. I took them to the park office for =
display before they wilted into nothing.

That is a showy one. We don't have them here in our area although they =
are
in the Windsor (valley) area if I remember correctly. Gorgeous.
I hope to post some of the photos of the ones I have seen this past week =
but
right now am trying to get ready for the garden club sale and an art

selling
them now from tissue. Can't remember who but I saw an ad.

wannna see mine? Some of them are in a provincial camping park not far =

here and the guys were mowing them off!!! well some of them. Steve =
warned
them not to any more but they will, once the flowers fade. There were =
spots
of nearly 20 in place but looks like the deer or maybe rabbits nibbled =
them
back to the ground. Some were stalks in flower and no leaves except the

Wonder if they would come back next year. I marked some and will check. =
