Hi, all, I have a question.... I was given some divisions of what seems to be
ribbon grass, though the person who gave it to me was not sure what kind of
grass it is.... It is quite lovely, variegated white and green, much
white...... the foliage is bent..
Anyway, in trying to find out what kind of conditions it prefers, I was
reading some things on the internet that got me worried. Is this invasive? If
so, is there any safe place to put it, or is the safest place in the compost
pile? I do like it, would love to have it brighten up some places, but don't
like it so much that I want to have ONLY this in my garden!!
Your advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

There is a verigated grass that is very invasive and I had some of
that and I also have a verigated grass, shorter. . .friend called it oat
grass. . .very well behaved. Best ask your friend. . .was she
dividing because it was trying to take over her yard or just cause it
seemed time. The invasive kind I planted in a bottomless pail and
that contained it for a while. . . once it "jumped" that I dug the
whole thing up and "gave" it away. Took it to the hort plant sale
marked as "invasive, spreads readily". . . sometimes folks want that
in a spot.

Word of Warning - That grass is very vigorous and can be quite invasive, so
I'd watch where I planted it. Personally, I wouldn't use it at all, unless I
had a place edged on all 4 sides with solid material (as in sidewalk,
driveway, etc). Otherwise, eventually you will be digging 2' deep to get
all the roots out... particularly if it reverts to the green species.

Hi, Jill, thanks for the response about the grass.... Unfortunately, she
did not know what kind it was. She actually gave me some just because I had
commented on how nice it looked! I will look up oak grass and see if that
might be what it is. Thanks,
marilyn

OOooh, thanks, Karen, guess maybe I will put it way in the back of the yard
with the maples, if anywhere.

Hi Marilyn, I like ribbon grass. very pretty and great in a cut flower
bouquet. You just have to be able to handle it. Famous last words those. I
now have part of the yard I mow and it is all ribbon grass. It stays fresh
looking as it comes back up. I thought I had it controlled by using a big
pot to contain it. Ha! it didn't pay any attention to that pot whatsoever.
Just like my mint. It sneaked out the bottom. Once it gets its mind made up
to grow someplace, it is hard to get rid of it....so put it in a place where
you know you will never mind it. It is very pretty and can make a mat you'll
need an axe to chop through, and I mean a sharp one!!
