I have two tomato plants in 5 gallon pots that need to be repotted into 10
gal. Is it better to do this in the evening? It's very hot (95!) and humid
right now and I don't want to stress the plants anymore than necessary,
especially since they have fruit and blossoms galore. I watered them earlier
today so they are fine where they are for now, but since I found roots
starting to peer out of the bottom (I always check the bottoms of the pots
to make sure the drainage holes aren't blocked and such) I figure I'd better
do it soon!

Every year a local nursery grows a tomato plant in a sack of soil leaning up against a wall. Just shows to grow ya that tomatoes will grow just about anywhere. Gina

Sue -- tomato plants also make roots along the stem... in fact, it's a good
idea to plant them deeper in the soil than they were before, since they will
be stronger -- and yes, I would do it on a (cooler) cloudy day. I've seen
folks growing tomato plants in big black plastic trash bags... with drainage
holes on the bottom ofcourse... lots of room for the roots!!
This weather is hellish on us (last nite we had a short but severe storm)
but I noticed that the basil grew about 3" more overnite!
