I was gifted a recently-dug Engelman spruce (Picea engelmanni)=2E It was =
dug
from an altitude of between 6000 and 7000', now at 6000'=2E The tree has =
a
double trunk, 36" and 28"L respectively, with largest trunk diameter near
the base about 1-1/4"=2E The trunks spread out in a broad 'V' shape to ab=
out
39" and 32"W=2E (Several places on the bark have patches of boulder and/o=
r
beard lichens=2E) There are a few small healthy buds also coming off the
trunks and branches, in addition to a fairly good compliment of needles on=

the branches=2E Some thin dead branches=2E Many needles do have the whit=
ish
sap deposits which are said to be common=2E This tree is being kept in a
spot near the back/south-facing side of my house and receives full sun
right now from about 7 am to right before noon=2E The soil is a mostly lo=
ose
mix of dig site soil and forest litter=2E I'm thinking of adding some
Turface to the 9" diameter x 9-1/4" tall black plastic container it is in=2E=

There is not much info out there about this tree as bonsai=2E The best (a=
nd
virtually only useful) info out there is the 1988/3 issue of International=

Bonsai magazine, pg=2E 26 w/a color photo by Ron Yasenchak and a little mo=
re
than half page on pg=2E 27 of text about it=2E

I am getting info from the club here, but what about others out there in
bonsai-dom=3F What are your experiences, good and not so good, with this
type of tree=3F Care recommendations: watering, fertilizing, pruning,
transplanting, etc=2E=3F Signs and symptoms to be watching for=3F Other =
pics of
these as bonsai=3F

Anything would be helpful=2E

Thanks,

Robert J=2E Baran
