Well, There was a day when dad crushed the stems, like forsythia, but =
then
he changed to immersion in hot water. I think this was still the =
favorite
at the rose society, although everybody played one-upsmanship on that as
well as everything else.
Recut if the stem is dried out at the end and then immerse in water at =
about
110 degrees and let it cool. Not boiling but just to the point that =
it's
uncomfortable to keep your hands in. (Although my hands aren't that
sensitive any more.) When cooled, transfer them into their display vase =
with
any old water. Supposedly, this starts the capillary action and unless =
the
stem is dried out for some reason, they continue to uptake the water and
last longer. People also used sugar, aspirin, etc.

Karen, were you also told to mash the bottom of the rose stems? A
co-worker who was also a plant expert, told me woody stems (I realize
roses aren't quite woody) had to be mashed a bit (she would stick them
in her mouth and chew them a bit). I just didn't know if roses were one =
that needed that too.

and I use the floral stuff in the water. I think they usually last =

than 3 days if I keep them out of the sun and the house is cool.
