When you get a pet from an animal shelter, they come with
idiosyncratic quirks and other baggage. When we got Tathers, every
time I opened the refrig he was there to "help me look." He didn't
help himself from the refrig, but the day Chuck left his sandwich on
the hearth to answer the doorbell, Tathers neatly removed the ham,
leaving Dad the bread, cheese and mustard. Once in six years isn't
bad...Margaret L

When Lou and I were married about a year we had already added two dogs to
our household.
Sage was the most beautiful German Shepherd we ever owned and Sam was a
mixed breed, mostly beagle, bought in Two Guys.
I had preheated Lou's supper because I was going out 'with the girls' and he
was staying home with the boys, Sam & Sage.
It was a left over leg of lamb in a cast aluminum Dutch oven.
When he went looking for his supper on the table he couldn't find it. Tried
the oven, the frig, everyplace he could think of.
He finally found the empty Dutch oven, hidden in the spare room. Sage had
stolen it and the two of them had eaten meat, potatoes, gravy and never
spilled a drop! They didn't even leave the TOP of the Dutch oven!

Okay, all animals are quirky. I just went out and bought another bird
seed cup today for my guinea pigs. I use a seed cup for their pellets,
because it can hook onto the side of the cage and when they run their
manic laps at night, it doesn't get tipped over. I also give them some
bird seed, which they love, and have been just adding it to their pellet
cup. Lately, Ruby has taken to getting her paws in there and pushing
the pellets out onto the floor looking for the bird seeds. So I'm
hoping this will save vacuuming and pellets.

Ginger, the cocker, since I'd been home with chemo, had taken to ONLY
drinking water out of the tub tap. She won't drink out of her bowl
anymore. Problem is, now that I'm back to work, she is parched by the
time I get home. Since she HAS had problems with urinary crystals, I
try to encourage her to drink lots of water, so this worries me. I'm
going to try putting an ice cream pail of water under the tub tap and
allow her access to the bathroom during the day, which she usually
doesn't have. Why can't she just drink from her bowl like normal dogs?!

Brenda, I thought my boy was the only water snob dog.
He will only drink water from a bowl if he sees me fill it. Then he has one
drink and the rest is no good. We take a daily walk to a river where he
stands so his paws are in the water and then he has a long drink. He will
not even look at a drinking device. Hoses are good, but I can't keep one
turned on. He did think the water from Old Faithful was exceptionally
wonderful, how weird. I was going to build a pond for him, maybe that would
be good enough!

I thought about one of those thingy's you attach to your outside tap -
like a water fountain for dogs. Went out and purchased a fancy, flowing
water fountain for inside. Big dome, water cascades down side. She
wouldn't go near it. 4 days later I was taking it back to the store.
The only time she'll drink out of her bowl now if if I've JUST filled it
- like in the last 5 minutes....and she HAS to have SEEN me fill it or
she "doesn't believe me" that it's fresh. Spoiled brat.

Hadn't thought about a lixit type bottle. Hmm. Have some of those
valves at work, maybe I could rig something up. Only thing with them is
that the critters can't get a good swig of water from them.

I wonder if there is something you could use to flavor the water that =
might encourage her to drink from a bowl. Not sure what you could use =
though.

I've read a couple of articles on guinea pigs saying not to add Vitamin
C to their water because it makes the water taste funny and they won't
drink it. Well, we add it to our piggie's water and they drain their
bottle every day! They need Vitamin C, but the problem with Vit C added
to the food is that it dissipates on storage, so you don't have a
guarantee that they're getting enough. Ditto the fresh veggies - though
at work we give oranges and they love those.

Can't think of what i could try to add to the water. She drinks a lot
of water normally, and I don't mind going into the bathroom and turning
the tap on, but sometimes I go in there and she's fallen asleep in the
tub waiting for me. Silly dog!

Hmmm. That might be worth a try. She LOVES soup. Does a little dance
when she sees me walking around with a soup bowl. She has many more
than one quirk, I'll tell you.

Ewww. Mom has a neighbour that doesn't put a bowl of water out for the
dog....makes the dog drink out of the toilet in the spare bathroom.
Yuck. Started a conversation with some people once about that - I won
the arguement. After testing it out (not me!), I was right in saying
that the dog can drink the toilet dry. These people thought the toilet
would constantly refill itself. what silly things we argue over.

That ...*looks like a urinal* ...gives me an idea...toilet bowl shaped water
bowls!
The dogs would love them.
Or in your case mini bathtub shaped bowl.
What about ice cubes that will melt over time. Leave them in the bathtub.

have you tried a pet fountain? I ahve one for the cats and they drink a lot
more now. Mine looks a bit like a urinal has a small pump that reroutes the
water constantly and there are filters tthere to refresh it. I change it a
couple time a week and top it up in-between.

I had a cat who would NOT drink from his (or any other) dish, but loved
to drink from the toilet bowl. I eventually gave up, made sure the bowl
was cleaned frequently, and left the seat up. The next cat to join the
family was a real youngster, about 4 or 5 months old, saw the big guy
doing it, and I guess, thought "Why not me?", but he fell in, and got
stuck under the seat trying to get out. For the rest of his life he
would go into the bathroom but if he thought someone might flush to
toilet, he beat a hasty, but dignified, retreat. The old man only would
drink from a water fish when he got too old and too sick to jump up to
the toilet seat, and he wouldn't drink from the dish if he knew anyone
was looking.

Aside from the 'ewww' factor, as long as it's cleaned regularly it isn't any
worse than the puddles, ditches, bird baths or anything else dogs can find
to drink from.
As long as no one throws a 'cleaner tablet' into the tank!

Ari is fascinated by the flushing toilet. No many how times I tell her =
it's
not something I do for her entertainment and that the fascination is =
really
a little gross. She will do her best to open the bathroom door if it's
closed. If it's not latched, she will open it. Kind of funny to sit on =
the
john and watch her paws come searching under the door.

Winnie just used to think that was time to socialize, so did his =
original
housemate. Their story was that their owner had been institutionalized =
for
Alzheimer's so I had this mental image of a caretaker parking someone on =
the
potty and letting the cats in to entertain.

But then I've heard the same here and from other people about their cats
choosing that time to seek them out for attention so I'm probably =
imagining
too much.

And why should cats be any different than kids?
Kids always need Mom as soon as she get into the bathroom...or on the phone!

Triscuit used to come answer the phone w/ me. He was always sure it was
for him. He and Otelo routinely came and socialized in the loo, and if
the door was shut, Triscuit would always guard it. Thisbe came there to
visit fairly often, Nike often comes for a chat, but Hyacinthe Beane
NEVER comes there. They are such individuals, just like people.

Yep. Dogs too. I'm fair game when I'm on the throne. Captive audience so to speak. Ginger always comes in and walks around between my feet, rubbing her face on my jeans and pushing her butt into me for a butt scratch. Wouldn't mind it so much if it weren't EVERY time.
