Apparently, the Zelkova Bonsai is a deciduous plant. After
it was brought up from the cold basement, most of the leaves
started to fall off. I noticed it had little white
droppings all around the edge of the container & on the
table. I sprayed it with some indoor bug killer & put about
2 inches of water in the bathtub & submerged the pot, like
the instructions said. Since that time, I have been closely
observing the plant & most of the branches have leafed out
again. (Whew!, I was a wreck over it!!) I am now waiting,
not very patiently for the other leaves to come out.
One needs either a magnifying glass or a strong pair of
eyeglasses to see what is going on with this plant. Up
close, there are occasional small clear looking dots that
appear to be sap. Or, could it be an insect of some sort,
hatching?
I am trying my damnedest to take care of this little tree.
I would surely hang myself in the garage if something went
wrong! ~g~
Thanks for the web site, Glenn. It is very informative.
My tree is more gnarled on the trunk and has a wonderful
twisted shape. All in all, I am quite enthralled with it.

Julie;
Please do not get too attached . We would miss you here.
As to your problem, My thought is that it is a natural occurance, most likely
a combination of factors - Ample moisture in the container and high humidity
in the room. The leaves are extruding moisture & the air is not drying up
this moisture as fast as it is being extruded. Hence the sap-like droplets.
Not a serious problem. Also, on the branches that havn't leafed out, take a
sharp knife and lightly scratch the bark, if it is bright green underneath,
then they will eventually leaf out. Sounds like an interesting shape.
I try not to get too involved with my plants--- Too depressing when they
die.
