I'm glad it's you, Jim Lewis, doing the weeding. Ours are under snow
yet but they're there, those uncultivated perennial wonders. I have
a question out of curiosity: What bonsai do you grow? How old are
they? Linda in NW Ohio.

I have about 150 trees, various species -- bald cypress, swamp
maple, Ilex vomitoria, boxwood, sweetgum, trident maple, juniper,
water elm, crape myrtle, satsuki and kurume azalea, etc. A
gazillion in pots off in the side yard that are "maybes" or
"somedays." Been at it for about 30 years. My "oldest" tree is
about 25 years in a pot, and a few before that. But "old" isn't
really the issue with bonsai. It is the ILLUSION of age that you
are working for. A 3-week-old tree CAN look like it's 100 years
old (but rarely; they usually need to be settled into pot for
3-4 years before they can exude that venerable feeling).
They (and pasture maintenance) take up much of my time. I weed
only when I must. ;-)

I am trying that this year. I have a Japanese Maple that I think would work
perfectly but since I know next to nothing about this, I am only
speculating. Any suggestions of good clear, I.e.. for the dummie type)
literature on the subject?

Sunset Magazine has an excellent (and inexpensive) book on
bonsai, aimed at the beginner, though even more advanced growers
find it useful too.
Sunset: Bonsai 2003. ISBN 0-376-03046-1. $14.95. B&N carry
it. Many garden centers (even Lowe(life)s and Home Despot) do
also.
