I've grown African violets in perlite, hydroponically. It's really easy. I
made my reservoirs from margarine tubs and set the pots of plants on top of
the tub lid, with a piece of yarn from the reservoir to the perlite. I think
it was on Crockett's Victory Garden that I first learned about it.
