You can use old-fashioned vaseline, too. Smear a circle of it
completely around the limb or trunk generously. Doesn't seem to "kill" anything.

Except the tree itself. IIRC I was told by an arborist this circle of
vaseline would kill a tree. I think Tree Tanglefoot folks tell you to
smear that product on a wrapper wrapped around a tree, not on the bark

Soaks through and contaminates or kills a section of the cambium,
perhaps. I'll see if I can contact the person who told me this, to

How would it be that a smeared circle of vaseline would kill the tree?

It's not that I don't think you recall correctly, but how would this
interfere with the tree's life-sustaining activities??

I don't know why it's so, but I've read the same thing. You should use a
band of duct tape around the trunk first and then smear the Tanglefoot or
Vaseline on that.
