Been lurking here for a few months. What a lot of information to absorb. =
Does anyone know if an avocado tree could possibly produce fruit, and be =
kept smaller? I know some fruit trees can be kept in large pots on =
patios. I know the trees get very big. I have 3 nice plants started from =
seed, one is about 4 ft high. I live in S. Florida. Just don't have =
enough room for a big tree. Any idea how many years before a tree does =
produce fruit? Thanks. Sue

I, also, am in north Texas.

How, may I ask, did you start your avocado tree? We have tried
and tried to get one to produce roots but, so far, no roots have
appeared.

When I was a child, we rooted them all the time. I assume, now,
that the producers are spraying them with something that causes
the seeds not to germinate.

If I remember right, I put toothpicks in it in 3 places and put one end in
water. It took a while to root. Maybe 6 weeks or so? Then just put it in a
small pot and upgraded as they grew. That was 3 years ago. I got the avocado
from a neighbors tree.

The last one I tried did not root either. I have the quickest
results with watching for one that has already formed a small nub
on the bottom of the seed. I wash it and put the toothpicks in and
change the water. I wouldn't doubt your theory:(. This may mean
the tree would never produce? My current tree is outside for now
(partial shade, day 27 of over 100 degree days here:(), she's not
a year old, I cannot remember how long I have had her??

I often find sprouted avocado seeds in my compost when it's nearly finished.
I've potted these up before and had nice foliage but haven't had them
survive the move indoors in winter.

That's how my children did it too. The avocado seed shouldn't be too far in the water. One has to be very patient. Warm room!

I have found them easy to start off in a mushroom tray or flat. If the tray
is filled with compost and the seeds are pushed into the compost to about
half their depth then stuck somewhere warm for a while, a year or so if I
remember rightly.
They develop a long taproot, and should be in as deep a pot for as short a
time as possible before planting.
There is no dwarf rootstock that I know of.
They are big trees (4-6 metres), and require cross pollination as the
flowers are either female in the morning and male in the afternoon, or vice
versa, so the tree cant self.
Prone to Phytophthora unless the drainage is impeccable.

Hi,

They are large trees but can be carefully pruned to stay smaller if you somewhat
restrict the root area in a large container. Remember that the bark will burn if
it gets too much direct sun, so protect the branches from too much light.

To start avocados, I just stick a fresh avocado seed in a planter & water it. It
will sprout fine in a few weeks.
