xmas cactus blooming

sounds like too much sun to me. They like cooler and not so much sun I find.
Mine are all, blooming now except one which should bloom later on after
Christmas. One root I have is over 100 years old. It is huge and need to be
repotted. A major undertaking and there are times I just want to take slips
and go from there but I made a promise and like to keep it. I am hoping when
the kids settle, someone will give it a loving (but not too) home

H Marg - Dunno - both were in a similar light situation. Really not
concened. BIL had one - humungous (sp?) that finally he gave away this
year. Used to put it out each summer and definitely got more sun than mine
did. They no longer had space for it. Just too large. BIL, Jon, became
quite an indoor plants person.

I wonder, Penny.. I was just looking at my white one. It has a reddish tinge
to the leaves and is kind of washed out looking where the other plants have
greened up so nicely. I am thinking I have been using rain water and I have
fed it a couple times with Cactus food and I think maybe that is the
problem. With the rainwater nutrients and the food, maybe it is treated too
richly.
I need to repot it as well, I am not treating indoor plants much better than
the outside ones this year.
I'd like for them to stay smaller but the grow so fast here.

Just a few thoughts about repotting Christmas cactus plants. We had
a huge plant, over 50 years old, that we decided to repot. We did
and what an ordeal. Gave it more room... larger pot. Bad idea. the
roots rotted because it was too moist for too long. The drainage was
not right or the potting mix had too much peat or something. So, be
aware. I didn't get it right.

The pink and white Thanksgiving cactus (aka: Christmas cactus) plants
at my house are blooming. They are small plants, starts from others
so I put several pots into a basket and they look very nice. The
blooms are almost larger than the plants. Linda in NW Ohio.

I love grouping them together and having such a display in a basket.
In the other house it was cooler, or maybe the temperatures were more even
and cooler, I set the electric at 62.5 daytime and down to 60 at bedtime,
(dressed in woollies) and the blooms lasted a good long time. Here with the
wood heating irregularly, they go pretty quickly. The blooms are drop dead
gorgeous this year. I try to paint them and will not quite get them....so
far but I will. I am determined!!!

Xmas Cacti like being root bound. I repot mine as little as possible.
What I do, is when it gets unruly, I prune leaves off and start new
plants. Either give them to friends or sell them at garage sale. I've
been getting lots of comments from those friends this week. Seems all
of the cacti are in bloom right now.

Just rereading Marg's bit on this thread re: cacti food. This summer
all my plants were in poor condition...hadn't fertilized in a coon's
age. I took household Miracle Gro to all of them with wonderful
results. My clementine orange all of a sudden turned from yellow to
bright green and started growing again. My African Milk Plant sprouted
a head of leaves. And my Christmas Cacti perked up remarkedly and are,
each and every one, in full bloom. Since summer I have been feeding
them about every other week or so. Can't say they don't like it.

Elizabeth...just find a friend who's cactus is a colour you want and
snip a few segments off!

Depends on your area and what window you have them in. I have mine in
south facing window and it gets too hot for them - the leaves turn red.
So I have to bring them back from the window in the summer so they don't
get the direct sun. If you have a north facing window, not as much of a
problem. But June is right, they're great plants, and relatively easy
to care for.

I'm thinking maybe I need one of these. What general care ideas can you
give me?

Hi Elizabeth,
I have one that is over 25 yrs. old. I water it,
and every now and then give it a bit of fertilizer.
It's set back from the window and enjoys room temperature.
I have another at work - about a year old - reblooming
now - in direct sunlight, get watered and fertilizer
every now and then. Great plant in my opinion.
My big geranium that I took inside is blooming away
in my office now.

My Christmas Cactus must be unique. So far my 2 plants have bloomed 5
separate times. I guess they like the window they are in. - Jenny

I had two in one large pot and the one that faced the south window bloomed
first and I turned it around and then the other side came into bud while the
first was blooming. What a long season I had and you're right, the blooms
can be numerous enough to blot out the main plant. Mine was an indoor plant
with no sunshine in the summer and no fertilizer.

I usually have a good overall bloom and then hit and miss over the next
couple months. I think you are lucky! I love these plants, maybe even more
than my orchids. So much less angst.

Gee Elizabeth. All the grocery stores here carry them from about 2.99 up.
There are gorgeous displays of them. I am being very strong. No more house
plants!; well except for maybe if a lovely yellow phalaenopsis shows up or
a real deep purple....
