Hi Joy
I have seen toads on top of my raised beds. When I was weeding the
strawberries one hopped over to see what I was doing. He watched for a
few minutes and then went on his way. I have garden snakes too. Love
them!!(grin) Every once in a while I have to rescue one from my cats.
Then I can't resist resorting to a childhood trick of trying to scare
family with it before putting it back in the garden. The grandsons are
still leery of them but Mom is finally getting used to me doing that.
Not being afraid of snakes came in handy when I was raising my girls. We
lived in a neighborhood with a lot of rough teenage boys (one right next
door). One day he and his friends came down the street with a big black
snake thathad gotten in someone's dryer. He stuck it in my face trying
to scare me. I reached out and petted it and said "Oh, your poor thing,
I hope these boys are going to take you over to the reservoir and let you
loose." I never had any trouble with the kids in that
neighborhood!!!(grin)

I'd suggest passing up the Jerry Baker potions. Many moons ago there was
discussion of him on this list, mostly negative as I remember.

Just because these are ordinary items does not mean they lack toxicity.
Tobacco juice can kill a child who ingests it or it can seep into your skin
and severely damage or kill an adult. Jerry Baker describes himself as a
"master gardener." He has no such credentials issued by academic
institutions. I know that some PBS stations run that "miracle in a jar"
crap, but when the day comes that they get the static sued out of them,
they'll stop purveying that dangerous information. Margaret L

My goodness, where are you located?
One organic, if time consuming, suggestion I have for getting your whiteflies
under control involves sticky yellow cardboard. I would hold the cardboard
near the infested plants, and wiggle the plants. This will cause the
whiteflies to swarm up off the plants. Catch as many as you can on the
sticky cardboard. Do this as often and with as many plants as you can.
You'll have to repeat it every day for as long as there are eggs hatching new
flies. Or maybe try a vacuum cleaner? Run the hose near the flies every day,
removing as many as you can.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Hot - Dry I have used the yellow card
before but I forgot about it. Actually I clipped a card covered with cooking
spray to a wire. It got so many whiteflies on it that it looked like
velvet. Then I noticed ants were taking off with the flies. They cleaned up
the whole thing and took their booty away! It was great for them - they were
already oiled and ready to eat. B

Yes, they do. Fortunately we have an electric fence around our veg garden
and the cats won't enter unless one of us is already inside -- which means
we can keep an eye on them.
Deborah T's comments about foregoing toad houses were well said. In my
defense, I have to say that our veg garden doesn't have any moist or boggy
areas to keep toads happy. That's why I set up the flower pot and water
dish, to keep toads visiting, even if on an irregular basis. They do like
the mulched beds, many goodies for them.

Toads like dampness and a shelter area. I have a couple here, and have
some clay pots turned upside down, with a large chunk taken out of a
side and rim, so they have a little home. They don't like hot dry
areas or a lot of sunlight. I recall a big fat toad that found himself
a nice big hole in the trunk of a tree, where he sits all day just
waiting for a bug to go nearby. I think he got so fat, that he wasn't
able to easily get out of the hole anymore.

We lived in Western WA too and had LOTS of frogs and toads! The keys
to seeing them is to build them homes and places to make babies! They
also are very attracted to the sound of trickling water. We build a
pond in Central Cali where nearly everything was covered in concrete
or sprayed with Round-up and sure enough within a few months we had a
community of toads traveling between the pond and my garden. Even the
smallest trickle works(like the cheap solar pumps you can get off
ebay) and a small basin of shallow water.
Best of Luck!

My heavy hauling is done with a riding lawn mower, and a 2x4 foot
wagon towed behind it. I carry about 300 or more pounds of 'stuff' to
my back yard/garden, where its level, but have to drive uphill to get
to it. Wheelbarrows are not very helpful. Raspberries produce on their
second year canes, so cutting all down will not give you much. After
their berry bearing year, they can be cut down, but I usually wait for
the green buds and leaves to sprout, before cutting any that are not
showing any green. I also add some fruit tree fertilizer that is sold
by Gardens Alive, and my berries were producing more than twice the
amount, and twice the size of what they usually show up as. Mine are
thornless red raspberries.

We have a natural pond here in the middle of our driveway, we put it
there, because otherwise we'd never get a car thru here. We have a
seasonal creek also, and I seeded the pond with tadpoles and rush and
cattails from the creek, so the following spring I had both leopard
frogs and toads in abundance. The toadlets, when they made the
migration to the woods, passed thru my 30x50 garden, and you could not
walk without stepping on them, I had to shuffle my feet, walk real
slow. Then after a few weeks, there were only a few left in the
garden, they are a couple years old now and still hanging out.
I also second the motion to only get native toads, don't import any
cane toads or somthing like that, your dogs will get killed and you'll
have strange teenagers sneaking around, trying to lick your toads....lol

Our toads used to live under our hot tub (when we had it, before it
died from an overly expensive malfunction) and they would try to eat
the rolling drops of water off your feet when you stepped out and were
drying off. Silly critters!
