Diane; my wife is a herp person. she said if they are garter snakes
and communing, it is for food almost certainly. since they eat insects,
and in particular pupae at this time of the year, a bunch of something
that produces the crawlies is probably the reason the snakes are more
numerous than normal. Just a guess, not seeing the spot. Don
