Penny, 2% milk is not very reduced in fat. I don't know where to get the
percentage, but the 2% is misleading. Skim milk is too watery, so we use
1%. Margaret L

"Whole" milk is 3.5%, IIRC. 2% is "reduced fat", but 1% is better,
and skim is best. My grocer carries a "skim-plus" which is 0%, but
isn't as thin as skim.

It doesn't matter to me, it's all the same on Grape-Nuts.

One way to get used to skim milk is to do it gradually. Going from 2% to
skim is pretty noticable. But use 1% for a few weeks, and then start
mixing it with skim. Maybe 3 parts to 1 for a while, then 2 parts to 1,
then half and half....

Five or so years ago, I never thought I'd be able to drink skim--just too
watery. Now, I can't drink 2 %--seems too much like cream. Taste buds
are remarkably adaptable, if you just give them a chance.

I'll also second the recommendation for http://www.fatfree.com/

Talking about low-fat milk tasting funny--
has anyone ever bought milk from the grocery that is still within the sell-by date, but it just tastes funny? Not sour or spoiled, but just a definite "off" taste?

That has happened to me so often with Kroger milk (1%), that I won't buy it there anymore. I returned the milk and complained several times, but never got an explanation.

We have 1% here so will try it the next time. After using 2% for years, I
can no longer stomach while milk so am sure I could get used to 1%. Thanks
Margaret.

Have tried the skim milk sold here and can't get used to it.

Yes, I have had that happen once or twice also. Don't know if it was
something the cows ate or they let it get too warm somewhere along the
way or what.

Elizabeth,
It has happened to me often enough that I actually stop at a different store
on the way home. I wouldn't shop at the first place, except that they have
the best breads and rolls around and most of their groceries are priced
less. Then off to the other for my produce and milk.

: Anne--That's what I've started doing, too. I get most of my groceries at
Kroger, since they have the best selection in my area. Then I have to go
somewhere else for the milk.

Kroger is where I get the Fat Free Plus milk. You might give it a try.

Jenny--I hadn't thought about the milk tasting different for cardboard/plastic. I always get the plastic containers, because they're available in the gallon size, and we drink a lot of milk!

Changing where I buy the milk seems to do the trick. I checked to make sure where I get the milk from now, Winn-Dixie, doesn't have the same supplier as Kroger.
Kroger also carries Sealtest, but the man in charge of the milk department told me it comes from the same supplier as that sold under the Kroger name, so that's no help!

Absolutely no offence Anne, but I really can't stand most of the dinner
rolls they sell here - look great on the outside but just a ball of fluff
inside and end up as a piece of sticky dough inside your stomach.

That is why I go to that one store. Publix has the best bread around.
Their hard rolls are as good as homemade and have a great flavor. These are
not the pkged kind, but handmade right there in the store, that store. It
is not guaranteed that the same quality will come from a different Publix,
but they must all be trained the same, because they normally do taste the
same when we have to get them from a different Publix.
Don't work there, but do love their bread
